Dorothy “Dot” McDonald Waldrop

Mrs. Dorothy “Dot” McDonald Waldrop, 87, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2015. She was a native of Natchez, Mississippi, and had resided in Hammond since 1966.
Mrs. Waldrop was the wife of 33 years to the late retired SLU coach Jim Waldrop and mother of Faye Ann Waldrop, of New Orleans. She was the daughter of the late Grady and Faye McDonald, and sister of the late Betty Jo Lang and Shirley Roberts. She is also survived by a niece, Gwen Young (Jim), of Natchez, and great-nieces, Taylor Young Brown (Tom) of Jacksonville, Florida, and Noble-Bates Young, of Ponchatoula.
Mrs. Waldrop taught at Ponchatoula Junior High School for three years before being named assistant principal at Ponchatoula High School. She retired from that position in the late 1980s and began a second career at the Daily Star in Hammond working as a news clerk and librarian for many years.
Mrs. Waldrop was a 20-plus year volunteer “Pink Lady” at North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond and also did volunteer work with TARC’s annual Penny Power fundraiser and for the Richard F. Murphy Hospice Foundation.
A celebration of Dot’s Life was held at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Hammond, Saturday, Jan. 24, from 1 to 2 p.m. with a service beginning at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.
