MARVIN HOMER ‘TIGER’ MORRIS

Marvin Homer “Tiger” Morris, 87, passed away on Thursday, March 5, 2015. He was born August 17, 1927 in Franklin, Louisiana to Marvin Henderson Morris and Marcilete Hayes Packard Morris.
He was known best by the nickname “Tiger” to family, friends and business associates. Tiger graduated from Franklin High School in 1944, attended Southwestern Louisiana Institute, then joined the US Navy in the latter stages of WWII where he served until his discharge in early 1947. Upon his return to Southwestern, he met his life time partner, Hazel Harvey and they were married in 1949. After obtaining a degree in geology in 1950 Tiger worked for a short time with The Texas Co. then attended graduate school at Louisiana State University. His business career began in 1952 with Arkansas Fuel Oil Corporation, then Texas Gas Exploration, both in Lafayette, Louisiana. In 1957 he and several good friends formed Marshland Petroleum Corporation and were active in oil and gas exploration activity in South Louisiana. The company was liquidated in 1965 and Tiger joined Quintana Petroleum Corporation in Houston, participating in both mining and oil and gas exploration activities for 24 years, retiring in 1989.
During his lengthy career in the oil business, Tiger played many roles, as a scout, geologist and landman, but as he liked to say, he was everything from a roughneck to a corporate executive.
Tiger and Hazel spent many happy years at their beach houses in Galveston, lake house on Lake Livingston and the Harvey farm in Louisiana. They also traveled extensively for a number of years, both before and after retirement.
Their greatest joy was time spent with their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and their many nieces and nephews.
Tiger was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing in Louisiana and Texas. The game of golf was also a passion, playing many different courses, but particularly with his friends at Cinco Ranch and River Ridge.
Tiger was a long time member of Memorial Drive United Methodist Church, where he served in many capacities and was devoted to the Bridgebuilders Class and the Men of Action where he was often a speaker.
Tiger was pre-deceased by his parents and brother, Wayne, and is survived by his loving wife of 66 years. Also, survived by daughters Sandra and husband, Sam Jacobs, of Houston; Pamela and husband, Clay Walters, of Honea Path, South Carolina and Mary Margaret “Midge” and husband, Michael Zak, of Houston. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and sister, Betty Grossman of Kerrville.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 12, 2015 at 11 a.m., at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church, 12955 Memorial Dr., Houston, TX 77079, with Dr. Charles B. Simmons officiating.
