Rosalie LaMarca Levatino, a resident of Independence, died at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015, at her home.
She was born Nov. 18, 1913, in Independence, and was 101 years of age.
She was a World War II veteran serving as a sergeant in the U.S. Army Women’s Corps. She was a loving and nurturing wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend. She was a devout Roman Catholic and a member of Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church. She was a wonderful cook and fed many people at Gina’s Café in Independence.
She is survived by her daughter, Catherine Levatino Russo and husband, Salvadore Jr., of Morgan City; grandchildren, Regina Maria Martin, of Independence, Jason Michael Martin and wife, Stacy, of Independence, Salvadore Joseph Russo III, of Baton Rouge, Philip Adam Russo, of New Orleans, and Catherine Rose Russo, of New Orleans; great-grandchildren, Isabelle Rose Martin and Katy Ann Martin; and son-in-law, Reginald D. Martin, of Independence.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Levatino; daughter, Cindy Levatino Martin; four brothers, Pasquale, Tony, Carlo and Salvador LaMarca; and four sisters, Jennie Masaracchia, Catherine Calcagno, Laura Caruso and Josie Polito.
Visitation was held at Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church from 9 a.m. until religious services at 11 a.m. today, Thursday, Jan. 8, 2015. Services were conducted by the Rev. Howard Adkins. Interment was in the Colonial Mausoleum in Independence.
