BERWICK — Limiting its mistakes in the second half and capitalizing on the miscues of Jeanerette helped Berwick High earn its second consecutive win Friday night with a 47-20 steamrolling of the Tigers.

“It has been a long time since Berwick had two wins in a row,” third-year Berwick coach Craig Brodie said. “This is the first time since I have been here, and it is a new experience for these kids.”

The win comes a week after Berwick defeated KIPP Renascence 7-0 Sept. 27 for the Panthers’ homecoming.

The Panthers (2-3) and Tigers (1-4) had similar statistics as Berwick had 416 total yards to 378 total yards for Jeanerette.

The lopsided score was largely the result of four Panther touchdowns during an 8:17 stretch of the third quarter.

Jeanerette held a 20-14 lead before the eight-minute Tiger meltdown.

During that time, Jeanerette had a kickoff coverage lapse, a blocked punt, a fumble to end a drive, an apparent screen pass ruled a fumble returned for a Berwick touchdown, four penalties and the Tiger head coach, Ananias Johnson, was tossed from the game.

Junior Jeremy Boudreaux returned a kickoff 62 yards for the Panthers after the Tigers marched 53 yards for a score on eight plays to open the second half. A 5-yard Tiger penalty gave Berwick first-and-goal at the 8.

On the first play, senior Panther quarterback Bobby Boudreaux scored the first of his three consecutive rushing touchdowns. The successful point-after-touchdown by Brooks Richard gave the Panthers a 21-20 lead with 8:50 remaining in the third quarter.

The Panthers would never relinquish the lead again.

A penalty and 14-yard sack of the Tigers led to a three-and-out and a blocked punt gave Berwick the ball first-and-goal at the Jeanerette 9. Three plays later, Boudreaux scored from 3 yards out. The PAT was missed to leave the score at 27-20.

A five-play Tiger drive ended with a fumble to Berwick at Jeanerette’s 39-yard line. Seven plays later, Boudreaux scored from the 1 to make the score 33-20. The PAT was blocked.

“This is the most I have scored in my whole life,” Boudreaux said. He appeared unstoppable when his number was called close to the goal line, and he also threw for two scores. “I just trusted my offensive line and followed them.”

Following Berwick’s score, Jeanerette returned the kickoff to the Berwick 48, but on the next play, an apparent pass to the wide receiver fell to the ground in front of the Berwick bench. When the whistle did not blow, Justin Morvant scooped up the loose ball and raced 55 yards for a score with 33 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Tiger bench was livid after the score. While Berwick lined up for the PAT, a 5-yard penalty was assessed on the Tigers. Johnson stormed on to the field and ended up being restrained by his own coaches as he was tossed from the game.

The score was 40-20 after Richard converted on the PAT.

Bobby Boudreaux tossed his second scoring pass and the final score of the night with 9:15 left in the game when he connected on a 48-yard completion with Braden Billiot. Richard added the PAT for a 47-20 score.

Both teams appeared unable to stop each other in the first half.

Berwick drove 50 yards on the opening drive but fumbled the ball away at the Jeanerette 16, which led to an 84-yard Tiger drive and the first score of the game when Ronald Boutte scored from the Berwick 3 with 4:01 left in the first quarter.

On the first play of the second quarter, Berwick’s Drew Landry scampered down the sideline for a 59-yard run, and two plays later, Jeremy Boudreaux scored on a 20-yard run. Richard added the PAT to give Berwick a 7-6 lead with 10:47 left in the first half.

Jeanerette had a 6-play, 65-yard drive to take the lead back on a 9-yard run by Darien Kiel. The 2-point conversion failed, leaving the score 12-7 with 9:36 left in the half.

Later in the second quarter, Berwick moved the football 77 yards in seven plays, which included a 29-yard run by Jeremy Boudreaux.

Bobby Boudreaux threw his first touchdown pass of the game to Richard for a 24-yard completion. Richard added the PAT for a 14-12 Panther lead.

Besides the touchdown catch and five successful PATs, Richard had 34 yards rushing.

“I am excited about this game,” Richard said. “I felt really good running the ball. I was just looking for the hole and kept running.”

Morvant led the Panthers’ ground game with 97 yards. Jeremy Boudreaux had 67 yards, and Landry had 66.

In a game of missed tackles on both sides, each team had 16 runs of 7 or more yards. Mikail Maxie, of the Tigers, led all rushers with 155 yards on 18 carries.

Berwick travels to play Franklin Thursday in district play.

“We will use this game to prepare for Franklin,” Brodie said as he watched his team celebrating on the field. “They have similar speed on offense.”
