Berwick, Erath each score twice in scrimmage

Berwick and Erath high schools both scored two touchdowns during their scrimmage Thursday, Berwick High coach Craig Brodie said.
Both teams’ scores came from their first-team units as the Panthers’ Kenan Jones caught two touchdown passes — one each from quarterbacks Cameron Wiley and Collin Louviere.
Brodie said the spring game went as he anticipated.
“We don’t really game-plan or anything for another team,” he said. “We kind of worry about what we do and not what they do. Spring’s a time to get the kids out there and look at their fundaments, the work we need to do with them to get them better, so they’ll be able to play. To try to put them in a position that they can be successful and try different things. … I think everything that we looked at and tried we got to see where we’re at and what we have to do from now all summer.”
Thursday’s scrimmage at Geisler Stadium in Berwick featured work for the first, second and third teams from each squad on offense and defense. The first teams went 12 plays, the second units, 10 plays and the third teams, eight plays. Each group got on the field twice.
Brodie said he had 31 eighth graders who came out he had to look at, a few of whom will play next year on the varsity squad.
Brodie said that eighth-grade class was a surprise for him this spring with their talent.
He also said the team’s wide receivers are talented and they have a quarterback who is a junior, a sophomore and a freshman in Wiley, Louviere and Mitchell Sanford, respectively.
“I think all three of them are very good, and we’ll be able to play those guys, develop them over the summer and see what happens,” Brodie said. “It’s nice to have a quarterback in each class so you just kind of replace. You don’t have to find somebody.”
The Panthers, who had 81 players out this spring, have a small senior class with just nine players.
“Our younger guys got to grow up quickly over the summer,” Brodie said.
Brodie said he hoped this fall he can try to have players see action one way instead of both ways.
