Berwick to host KIPP Renaissance

By CORWIN MURRAY

The Berwick Panthers will be looking for their second consecutive homecoming win against KIPP Renaissance Friday at Geisler Stadium.
Berwick (1-2) beat KIPP Renaissance 7-0 in last season’s homecoming.
“Homecoming week is always a bit of a distraction, but we ask the kids to come in and get their work done so they can enjoy the festivities,” Berwick head coach Craig Brodie said. “We had to work on our fundamentals this week.”
Things didn’t go so well against Hanson Memorial last week. Hanson got on the scoreboard late in the first quarter last week and never looked back, cruising past Berwick 41-14.
“They’re a good team,” Brodie said. “They have a lot of experience, and we just didn’t play well.”
The Tigers’ extended their lead to 28-0 near halftime before Berwick finally got in the Tigers’ end zone with 52 seconds left in the half. Quarterback Jeremy Boudreaux threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Justin Morvant to cap a 60-yard drive and bring the score to 28-7 at halftime. Boudreaux was 9-of-16 passing for 91 yards with a touchdown and an interception. The senior has completed 27-of-46 passes for 338 yards with five touchdowns and four interceptions this season.
Audwin Williams had four catches for 71 yards, while Morvant had two catches for 17 yards and a touchdown. Williams has 14 catches for 203 yards and a score this season, while Kenan Jones has four catches for 80 yards and two scores. Marquis Rogers has two catches for 25 yards and a score, and Morvant has three catches for 18 yards and a score.
Senior Braden Billiot led the Panthers with 79 yards on just five carries. He has carried 23 times for 262 yards for an average of 11.4 yards a carry.
“He has run the ball very well for us,” Brodie said. “We have to get the ball into his hands as well as our other playmakers.”
Boudreaux also has run the ball well for Berwick, carrying 34 times for 82 yards and a score.
Rogers has 26 yards on nine carries, while Dralyn West has 24 yards on nine carries and a touchdown.
One positive for Berwick last week was getting its younger players some playing time.
After the game “got out of hand” with the Panthers trailing 41-7, Brodie said after the game it was time for the younger players to get some experience. Still, Brodie said Friday he would have preferred those players be in the game due to the Panthers being so far ahead.
This week’s opponent, KIPP Renaissance (1-2), lost to Parkview Baptist 45-20 last week.
“They are a lot like last year’s team,” Brodie said. “They’re a spread team, and they have some good athletes who they try to get the ball to.”
Friday’s kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
