Berwick, Patterson baseball players earn Class 3A All-State recognition

Staff Report

Patterson and Berwick high schools were represented with Class 3A All-State recognitions as the schools each had three honorable mention selections.
Patterson seniors Kenny Singleton and Jake Lagrange and junior Sirbatian Charles were honored.
As for Berwick, the Panthers were represented by seniors Neal Theriot and Justin Morvant and junior Brandon Fryou.
Patterson coach Ryan Jensen said it’s a great honor for the program when players get all-state recognition.
“To have (three) guys is huge for us, and I think it shows how we continue to grow and develop our baseball program,” he said. “I’m happy for these kids as it shows how their hard work has paid off, but above all, I’m excited for Patterson High School baseball and the positive notoriety this gives us.”
The three selections were the top pitchers for the Lumberjacks this year. The squad boasted a 2.46 ERA this year.
“Kenny and Sirbatian were the guys who would get the starts in the big district games, and Jake was the guy we relied on to come in and close them out,” Jensen said. “We expected all (three) of them to have great seasons, but I think they exceeded our expectations. As a coach, there is so many things in the course of a game day and game that you have to manage and deal with, and knowing when we put these (three) on the mound that we were going to get a great outing, that gave us every opportunity to succeed (and) made my job a whole lot easier.”
Patterson finished its season with a 16-12 mark and fell in the first round of the playoffs to University Lab.
Berwick coach Mike Thomas said his selections were valuable to their program.
“They’re good character kids,” he said. “They’re hard working. … It’s good to have Fryou back and … I hate to see the other two go because of what they meant to our program over the last four years.”
Morvant had an error-free season in centerfield. He batted .348 with three doubles, one triple and 10 RBIs.
Theriot batted .328 with four doubles, one triple and 8 RBIs.
He also was 2-3 on the mound with two saves. In 40.1 innings, he surrendered eight walks, fanned 27 and had an ERA of 1.74.
Fryou hit .310 with four doubles and 16 RBIs.
On the mound, he was 3-0. In 17.1 innings, he surrendered 10 walks, fanned 16 and had an ERA of 2.02.
Berwick finished its season with a 17-13 mark and fell in the first round of the playoffs to Jena.
