Berwick, Patterson combines for five all-state selections

Staff Report

Berwick and Patterson High schools combined for five honorable mention Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 3A All-State selections.
Berwick’s representatives were juniors Cameron Wiley, D.J. Robichaux and Bradley Gray, while Patterson was represented by junior Jamey Fabre and senior Bryce Beaubouef.
John Menard, who served as assistant coach this past season before taking over as head coach at the end of this school year, said of his team’s selections: “We’re very proud that they were recognized for their accomplishments this year. All three guys have worked extremely hard, and it’s good to see that their hard work has paid off.”
He said he looks forward to what the trio can do in their final year of high school.
Wiley finished the season with a 4-2 mark. In 37.1 innings, he recorded a 2.81 ERA. He surrendered 15 earned runs with 18 walks and fanned 32.
Offensively, he batted .329. In 78 at-bats, he recorded 29 hits, including 10 doubles, and collected 13 RBIs.
Robichaux concluded the 2016 season with a .324 batting average. He had 24 hits this season, including seven doubles and one triple. He collected 15 RBIs.
Gray finished the 2016 season with a 5-3 mark on the mound and a 3.82 ERA. In 40.1 innings, he surrendered 22 earned runs, walked just nine and fanned 36.
Offensively, he batted .287, collecting 25 hits, including seven doubles and one home run. He had 15 RBIs.
Fabre had a .402 batting average this season. In 87 at-bats, he had 35 hits, including two doubles. He collected 22 RBIs and scored 17 runs. He also stole five bases. He struck out just twice all season.
He recorded an on-base percentage of .490 and a slugging percentage of .425.
Defensively, he had an .880 fielding percentage.
“Jamey was as consistent of a contact hitter as we’ve had here,” Patterson Coach Ryan Jensen said. “The two numbers that really jump out to you are his batting average being over .400 and the fact that he only struck out two times the entire season.
“Jamey is one of those rare hitters who feels just as comfortable with two strikes as he does in advantage counts,” Fabre added. “I thought he did a really nice job of driving in more runs this past season. We’re fortunate to have him back again next season and look for similar, if not more success, moving forward.”
Beaubouef finished his final season with a .349 batting average. In 83 at-bats, he connected on nine doubles, two triples and two home runs. Beaubouef collected 22 RBIs, stole five bases and scored 20 runs.
Defensively, he recorded a .944 fielding percentage.
“Bryce really showed improvement in his consistency at the plate this season and was an offensive threat for us despite what seemed like a season-long battle with injuries,” Jensen said. “He was one of the most powerful hitters I’ve seen and really had an ability to drive the ball into the gaps and give us a real extra base hit threat.
“Had he been healthy for any extended period of time, I think you would have seen his numbers reach an even higher level of success,” Jensen added.
Berwick’s and Patterson’s league, District 8-3A, was well represented on the all-state team.
First-team selections from the league included E.D. White’s Trey Besson and Trey St. Pierre, Erath’s Bren Faulk and Mason Granger, and North Vermilion’s Connor Dupuy.
Honorable mention selections included E.D. White’s Colin Desandro, Brandon Legendre and Stephen Soignet; and Erath’s Luke Young.
