The Berwick Panthers shut out West St. Mary, but the Panthers only managed one score on a quick drive during its scrimmage Friday at Geisler Stadium.
Berwick nearly held West St. Mary on its side of the field the entire night, with several tackles for loss and two interceptions, both by Lucas Hatch.
“We’re going in the right direction,” first-year Berwick Coach Eric Holden said. “I thought we did some good things. We had some good moments (and) some bad moments. That’s to be expected. It’s the first time we’ve strapped it on against somebody else.”
The Wolfpack crossed the 50-yard line on its second-to-last possession on the strength of a pass interference penalty by the Panthers.
Meanwhile, the Berwick offense had its most success on its second offensive drive, covering 70 yards in three plays that was capped by a 3-yard touchdown run by Josh Jones.
Quarterback Collin Louviere started the drive with a 35-yard run to the West St. Mary 35-yard line.
Carver followed it up with a 32-yard catch to the West St. Mary 3-yard-line on a pass that was deflected before Carver reeled it in.
One play later, Jones scored from 3 yards out.
While Mitchell Sanford, who started the scrimmage at quarterback for Berwick, and Louviere teamed to move Berwick down the field with some backups in action, the team could not score as Roddrick Hudson intercepted Louviere.
However, Berwick freshman running back Keyon Singleton had several nice runs on the series, and Jerry Crowe reeled in a 14-yard reception from Sanford.
Later in the series, though, Sanford was intercepted by West St. Mary’s Wayne Armelin on a deep ball attempt to Carver.
Sanford directed Berwick’s first drive inside the West St. Mary 10-yard line after a slow start, but the Panthers couldn’t finish the drive.
“I thought our quarterback (Mitchell Sanford) on the first drive made some good reads,” Holden said. “We got to get better. The running back’s got to hit the hole a little bit harder.”
Defensively, Berwick had several tackles for loss.
“Defensively, I think we can fly around more,” Holden said. “I’ve seen us play more aggressive in practice, so I’m not satisfied with that. I’ve also seen our offensive line come off a little more aggressive (as) well, so we got to up our intensity a little bit.”
Berwick quarterbacks connected with several receivers besides Carver, specifically Kenan Jones. Jones had several receptions good for first-down yardage, including a pass he reeled in before reversing fields for a 41-yard gain.
Armelin had several runs, while Hudson caught several passes from quarterback Dondre Johnson to lead the West St. Mary offense.
