Berwick upset 5A's top team, Lafayette High

Staff Report

The Berwick High School baseball team scored a huge upset Tuesday as it defeated Class 5A’s top-ranked team, Lafayette High, 5-4, in nondistrict action in Lafayette.
Lafayette (18-7) came into the game as the best team in the state’s largest classification for baseball, according to the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s most recent rankings released Tuesday.
Berwick is ranked No. 17 in Class 3A.
The Panthers did much of their damage early, scoring one run in the first, two in the second and another in the third for a 4-1 lead after three complete innings.
While Lafayette High tied the score at 4 in the bottom of the fourth, Berwick came back with a run in the top of the fifth. The Panthers kept the Lions off the scoreboard the remainder of the game.
Berwick outhit Lafayette, 6-3, as three Berwick pitchers combined for the dominant performance. The second of three pitchers used, Grant Oubre, earned the win. In 3.1 innings, he surrendered three runs — one earned — on two hits with three walks, one hit batter and one strikeout.

CCHS suffers
first district loss
The Central Catholic Eagles suffered their first District 7-1A loss of the season as they fell to Hanson, 7-3, in Amelia Tuesday.
The game, an upset victory for Hanson, was a battle of the top 3 teams in the latest Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 1A power rankings.
Central Catholic took the lead early with a run in the bottom of the first inning, but Hanson responded with three runs in the top of the second to take the lead for good. The Tigers would add a run in the fourth, two in the sixth and a run in the seventh for a 7-1 advantage.
Central Catholic cut its deficit to 7-3 in the last inning via a Thomas Garber two-run home run but could get no closer. The loss broke a five-game winning streak for the Eagles.
“They had better at bats than us, they pitched better than us, they played better defense than us, they coached better than us,” Central Catholic coach Tyler Jensen said. “Give Hanson lots of credit. They dominated the game and deserved to win. We have to start playing better as the season winds down. There is no better time than now. We also have to do the little things better on an everyday basis.”
Hanson outhit Central Catholic 9-6. Each team left 10 runners on base, while errors were even at three apiece.
However, the Eagles pitching staffed combined for nine walks in the loss.
Gregory Leger suffered the loss. In 3.2 innings, he surrendered four runs — one earned — on five hits with seven walks and three strikeouts.
Garber led Central Catholic’s offense with a 3-for-4 performance with a home run, two RBIs and a run. Mitchell Lemoine added a 1-for-4 performance with an RBI.
Central Catholic (18-4 overall, 8-1 in district) and Hanson will meet again Thursday at 6 p.m. in Franklin for their second district contest. The contest is key to the district race as Central Catholic has a one-game lead on Hanson, who sits at second in league play at 7-2.
Patterson’s upset
bid falls short
The Patterson Lumberjacks upset bid against one of Class 3A’s best teams fell short as the Lumberjacks fell 6-5 to Erath in baseball action at Patterson Tuesday.
While Patterson took a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the first, Erath rallied with two runs in the third and fourth innings to tie the game at five.
The score remained the same until the Bobcats pushed across a run in the top of the seventh on a bunt single after a runner who had singled in the inning advanced to third on a two-base error.
Patterson had four errors in the loss.
Hits were even among the teams at 11 apiece.
Brennan Gouaux suffered the loss for Patterson. In seven innings, he surrendered six runs — four earned — on 11 hits with two hit batters and four strikeouts.
Offensively, Jamey Fabre led Patterson with a 3-for-4 performance. Other top contributors included Joel Singleton, 2-for-3, a run; Blake Dreyer, 1-for-3, two RBIs; Matt Dardeau, 1-for-3, a double, an RBI and a run; Brad Beaubouef, 1-for-3, an RBI and a run; Tyrik Singleton, 1-for-4, an RBI and a run; and Bryce Beaubouef, 1-for-4, a double and a run.
