Berwick upsets Erath, 6-3, in District 8-3A action

The Berwick Panthers upset Erath, 6-3, in District 8-3A baseball action at Erath Thursday.
Erath entered the game ranked No. 3 in the latest Class 3A Louisiana High School Athletic Association power rankings, while Berwick is ranked No. 26.
The loss avenged a 7-1 defeat for Berwick at the hands of Erath two days earlier.
Berwick scored five runs in the top of the seventh to earn the victory.
Early on, Erath scored a run in the bottom of the first and two in the bottom of the fifth for a 3-0 lead.
Berwick cut its lead to 3-1 in the top of the sixth before its seventh-inning outburst.
Each team had eight hits.
Bradley Gray earned the win as he surrendered three earned runs on seven hits with one walk, one hit batter and fanned three.
Nick Mayon earned the save. In one inning, he surrendered no hits or walks and hit one batter.
Offensively, Cameron Wiley led Berwick with a 3-for-4 performance with a double. Other top offensive contributors included Cody Roberie, 1-for-2, an RBI; D.J. Robicheaux, 1-for-3, two RBIs; Andrew Askew, 1-for-3, a double; and Mitchell Sanford, 1-for-1, a double.
Berwick (8-13 overall, 3-1 in district) will continue District 8-3A action Saturday when it makes the short trip to face the Patterson Lumberjacks in a 1 p.m. contest.
Central Catholic
defeats Centerville
Central Catholic shut out Centerville, 7-0, in District 7-1A action in Amelia Thursday.
Central Catholic scored one run in the second inning, and two in each of the third, fourth and sixth innings.
Patrick Barron earned the win. In four innings, he surrendered no hits, walked five and fanned nine.
He and reliever Thomas Mire combined to surrender just two hits and strike out 13, but walked six.
Offensively, Drake Angeron led the Eagles with a 3-for-3 performance with a double, two RBIs, a stolen base and two runs. Other top offensive contributors included Patrick Barron, 2-for-4, an RBI; Thomas Garber, 1-for-2, two RBIs; and Stefano Guarisco, 1-for-3, an RBI, a stolen base and a run.
Central Catholic (14-3, 4-0) was scheduled to continue District 7-1A action today at home against Highland Baptist but that game has been rained out. The Eagles now will play a doubleheader Tuesday at Highland Baptist.
Morgan City defeats South Lafourche
The Morgan City Tigers defeated South Lafourche, 12-8, in District 7-4A action on the road Thursday.
Joshua Lorenzo led Morgan City with a 1-for-4 performance with a home run, four RBIs and two runs. Other top contributors included Colby Glatter, 2-for-3, an RBI and three runs; Philip Hutchinson, 1-for-3, a double, two RBIs and two runs; Abram Hartley, 1-for-3, two RBIs; Ross Albritton, 1-for-3, an RBI; and Rhett Fryou, 1-for-4, a double, an RBI and a run.
Joseph Doiron earned the win on the mound. In 5.2 innings, he surrendered five runs — three earned — on eight hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
South Lafourche outhit Morgan City 9-8.
The Tarpons committed four errors while Morgan City had three miscues.
Morgan City (9-9, 2-0) will return to action Monday when it travels to face Comeaux in a 4:30 p.m. contest.
Patterson falls
to Kaplan
The Patterson Lumberjacks fell to Kaplan, 11-7, in District 8-3A action at Kaplan Thursday.
Errors doomed the Lumberjacks as they committed seven in the contest. Just three of Kaplan’s runs were earned.
Patterson pitchers also combined for seven walks and three hit batters.
Patterson stranded 11 runners on base, while Kaplan left 10 on the base paths.
Patterson took its only lead in the top of the first when it plated a run.
While it cut Kaplan’s lead to one run in the top of the second (4-3) and in the top of the fourth (6-5), Kaplan never relinquished the lead.
Joel Singleton suffered the loss for Patterson. In 2.1 innings, he surrendered six runs — two earned — on six hits with four walks, one hit batter and three strikeouts.
Offensively, Brennan Gouaux led Patterson with a 2-for-2 performance with a double, an RBI and two runs. Other top offensive contributors included Brad Beaubouef, 2-for-3, an RBI; John Brooks, 2-for-4, two doubles, an RBI and two runs; Jamey Fabre, 2-for-4, two RBIs and a stolen base; and Singleton, an RBI, two runs and a stolen base.
Patterson (9-8, 1-1) will return to action Saturday when it hosts Berwick in District 8-3A action. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
