Berwick wins 1st district game in nearly four years

Berwick won its first district game in nearly four years Tuesday, topping Patterson, 45-35, in District 8-3A action in Berwick.
The win was the first in league action for Berwick since a 40-25 victory against Franklin on Feb. 11, 2013.
In Tuesday’s first half, the teams had opposite quarters as Patterson outscored Berwick, 15-2, in the first eight minutes before Berwick countered in the second quarter with a 13-2 scoring advantage.
Patterson led 17-15 at halftime.
Berwick’s biggest quarter came in the third period when it outscored Patterson, 20-6, for a 37-21 lead after three quarters.
While Patterson made a fourth-quarter run, Berwick withstood the scoring surge en route to the win.
Jordan Lipari led Berwick with 20 points. Other scorers included Madison Carline, 13; Mary Jordan Melancon, six; Tia Whitehead, four; and Alira Clark, two.
Nyla Holder led Patterson with 12 points, while Kemprielle Williams also reached double figures with 11 points. Other scorers included Makayla Ruiz, six; Kemiah Watson, three; Briana Butler, two; and LaTravia Perro, one.
Patterson (3-8 overall, 0-4 in district) will return to action Friday when it hosts E.D. White in district play. The game is set to begin at approximately 6 p.m.
Berwick (3-14, 1-4) will return to action when it travels to face Kaplan in District 8-3A action Friday. The game is set to begin at approximately 6 p.m.
CCHS defeats
Highland Baptist
Central Catholic won its second straight contest Tuesday with a 61-33 win against Highland Baptist in New Iberia.
Yani Johnson led Central Catholic with 17 points. Other scorers included Aaliyah Poole with 11 points and Rebecca David, seven.
Central Catholic scored 60-plus points for the second straight contest, which Coach Cory Brodie said is “huge” for his team.
He said adding Poole, who became eligible last week, “has been a big boost for our offense,” while Brodie said putting David in the starting lineup “gives us a spark and more depth off the bench.”
Central Catholic (9-9, 3-2) will continue league play Friday when it travels to face Vermilion Catholic.
Assumption clips MCHS
Assumption High School edged Morgan City, 51-47, in District 7-4A action in Napoleonville Tuesday.
Alisha Singleton led Morgan City with 20 points. Other scorers included Sh’Diamond Holly, 14; Hailey Lewis and Deryon Johnson, six points apiece; and Nia Lightfoot, one.
Morgan City (5-5, 0-1) will return to action Friday when it hosts South Lafourche in District 7-4A action. The game is set to begin at approximately 6 p.m.
