The Tri-City area's four high schools were in action Thursday on the opening day of the inaugural Tri-City Baseball Classic. Central Catholic and Patterson High schools won their openers, while Morgan City and Berwick High schools fell. Central Catholic defeated H.L. Bourgeois 9-3, and Patterson topped Northside 13-5. Morgan City fell to Central Lafourche 17-2 in five innings, and Berwick fell to South Lafourche 4-1. Central Catholic, Patterson win on Day 1 of Tri-City Baseball Classic

Central Catholic opened its season at the Tri-City Baseball Classic with a 9-3 win against H.L. Bourgeois Thursday in Amelia.
The game was one of three moved Thursday to Amelia due to rain in the area on Wednesday.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth when H.L. Bourgeois plated a run.
The Eagles responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame and four more in the bottom of the fifth for a 6-1 lead.
While H.L. Bourgeois cut its deficit to 6-3 in the top of the sixth, Central Catholic responded with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Central Catholic pounded out eight hits but had four errors in the win, while H.L. Bourgeois had four hits and three errors.
Each team left nine runners on base.
Gregory Leger Jr. earned the win for Central Catholic. In four innings, he surrendered an unearned run on two hits with two walks and nine strikeouts.
Charlie Barron pitched an inning of relief and surrendered two walks and fanned one, while Patrick Barron tossed an inning and gave up two unearned runs on two hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
Blake Hidalgo closed the game, pitching an inning and fanning one.
Hidalgo led the Eagles offensively as he finished 2-for-4 with two doubles, four RBIs and a run.
Other hitters for the Eagles included Matthew Barbier, 1-for-3, two RBIs; Mitchell Lemoine, 1-for-2, an RBI and a run; and Tony Pennison, an RBI.
Central Catholic (1-0) will return to action today when it faces Covenant Christian in a 3:15 p.m. contest at Tiger Diamond in Morgan City. The game originally was scheduled to be played at Patterson High but has been relocated and moved up as a result of changes made to the tournament Thursday.
Also, E.D. White’s contest with Rayne, originally scheduled for Thursday at Tiger Diamond, has been moved to today at 5:30 p.m. in Patterson.
On Saturday, Central Catholic will face Northside at 1:30 p.m. at Patterson High.
No other changes are expected in the tournament, which will continue at its original three sites — Panther Diamond in Berwick, Tiger Diamond, and Lumberjack Diamond in Patterson — today and Saturday.
In Tri-City Baseball Classic action at Patterson High, Patterson defeated Northside 13-5, while Morgan City fell to Central Lafourche 17-2 in five innings.
In Patterson’s win, the Lumberjacks rallied for the win.
Northside scored three runs in the top of the first and Patterson cut its deficit to 3-2 after three innings.
However, the Vikings responded with two runs in the top of the fourth for a 5-2 lead before Patterson came back with three more in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at five.
The Lumberjacks broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth with an eight-run frame.
“It wasn’t the prettiest win, but I thought we showed a lot of resiliency last night,” Patterson head coach Ryan Jensen said. “We could have folded a couple times but kept competing and found a way to win, and that’s the most important thing. Obviously there is a lot for us to improve on and I hope to see a better performance tonight.”
Tyrik Singleton led Patterson offensively with a 3-for-3 performance with two doubles, a triple, four RBIs and three runs.
Other top hitters for Patterson included Kenny Singleton, 2-for-3, a double, an RBI and four runs; Bryce Beaubouef, 2-for-5, a double, and two RBIs; Sean Stewart, 1-for-4 and three RBIs; Jamey Fabre, 1-for-3, an RBI, a run and a stolen base; Joel Singleton, 1-for-3, an RBI and two runs; and Blake Dryer, 1-for-4, a double and a run.
Jake Lagrange earned the win in relief for Patterson. In 1.2 innings, he surrendered one hit and fanned five.
Brennan Gouaux started for Patterson, and in four innings, he surrendered five earned runs on seven hits with two walks and struck out five.
In 1.3 innings of relief, Lukas Carnley surrendered a hit, walked two and fanned two.
Patterson had 11 hits and left 11 runners on base in the win, while Northside had nine hits, three errors and left seven on base.
Patterson (1-0) will return to action today when it plays Bunkie at 7:45 p.m. at Patterson High, while on Saturday, the Lumberjacks will face Covenant Christian in an 8:15 p.m. contest.
Also at Patterson Thursday, Morgan City fell to Central Lafourche in five innings.
Central Lafourche connected on four home runs in the first two innings — two solo home runs in the first and two grand slams in the second inning.
Morgan City plated two runs in the contest but the game was called in the fifth inning due to the mercy rule.
Malik Phillips finished 2-for-3 to lead Morgan City offensively.
Phillip Hutchinson was the losing pitcher for the Tigers.
“Believe it or not, we played well enough to win,” Morgan City coach Tim Vidos said. “I was proud of Phillip and Evan (Stadalis) for their pitching. We only walked two. Central Lafourche hitters are strong and have a great approach at the plate. … We never quit fighting last night. The kids have character and heart. They’re going to win a lot of games.”
Morgan City (1-1) will return to action today when it faces Thomas Jefferson in a 5:30 p.m. contest at Tiger Diamond.
On Saturday, the Tigers will face St. Paul’s of Mobile, Alabama, in a 3:45 p.m. contest.
In other Tri-City Classic action in Berwick, the Berwick Panthers fell to South Lafourche 4-1 Thursday.
While South Lafourche took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, Berwick responded with a run in the bottom of the frame.
However, South Lafourche came back with two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth for the victory.
Hits were at a minimum as South Lafourche had just six and Berwick four. Berwick also had five errors. Just one of South Lafourche’s runs were earned.
Austin Price suffered the loss for Berwick in relief. In four innings, he surrendered three runs — one earned — on three hits with one walk and one strikeout.
Andrew Askew started for Berwick, and in three innings, he gave up one unearned run on three hits with one walk, hit two batters and fanned four.
Justin Morvant led Berwick offensively with a 2-for-3 performance, while Neal Theriot finished 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Berwick (1-1) will return to action today when it faces New Iberia at 3:30 p.m. in Berwick.
The Panthers will play two games Saturday, both in Berwick, as they face Rayne at 11:15 a.m. and Bunkie at 3:45 p.m.
