Patterson’s Daylon Charlot makes a move against E.D. White during the Lumberjacks’ 40-34 win Friday. Charlot led the Lumberjack receivers with five catches for 125 yards and a touchdown, including a key catch late in the contest on Patterson’s game-winning drive. The Lumberjacks will return to action Friday when they host Berwick in a District 9-3A contest that also will serve as the Lumberjacks’ homecoming.

'Jacks survive Cardinals 40-34

THIBODAUX — Deontay Jones scored the winning touchdown with 1:02 remaining in the game as Patterson stunned upset-minded E.D. White 40-34 Friday.

E.D. White took the lead with 4:07 to play when sophomore quarterback Benjamin Sposito rolled out and found Josh Chiasson behind the Patterson defense for a 30-yard touchdown.

Trailing 34-32, Patterson went on an 8-play, 67-yard drive with the big play coming on a third-and-13 from the E.D. White 38-yard line. Quarterback Spencer Landry connected with standout receiver Daylon Charlot for 30 yards to setup a first-and-goal at the 8-yard line. On second-and-three, Jones burst through the Cardinals defense for the winning score.

“We felt like if we just kept our act together and didn’t get behind the chains on first down then we would move the football,” Patterson head coach Tommy Minton said. “They came out poised and did what they needed to do to put the ball in the end zone.”

E.D. White got the ball back with just 56 seconds left and never threatened to score.

Landry led the Jacks offense, completing 20-of-28 passes for 297 yards and four touchdowns. The senior has completed 143-of-238 passes for 2,326 yards with 28 touchdowns and 10 interceptions this season.

Charlot was the top receiver, pulling in five balls for 125 yards and a score.

PHS (6-2, 2-0 District 9-3A) won its sixth game in a row, while E.D. White fell to 3-5, 1-2 in the district.

“E.D. White did a great job,” Minton said. “They moved the ball very, very effectively, and we had a hard time stopping them. They did a good job of mixing it up, and we were just fortunate to get that last touchdown in leaving them with little clock.”

E.D. White fullback Darius Charles practically carried the Cardinals’ offense on his back. The 220-pound junior carried 25 times for 141 yards and three touchdowns.  E.D. White rushed for 221 yards. Sposito was 4-of-5 passing for 107 yards and two touchdowns.

“We wanted to keep the ball away from them as much as possible, and we wanted to have a chance to win in the fourth quarter,” E.D. White coach Kyle Lasseigne said.

The Cardinals got off to a fast start, marching down the field on an 8-play, 72-yard drive that Charles capped with a 4-yard touchdown run on the game’s opening possession. The drive took 3:58 off the clock.

Patterson answered with a 2-play, 73-yard drive when Landry hooked up with Jedrick Gunner for a 45-yard touchdown, and the back-and-forth was on.

“They have a lot of great athletes,” Lasseigne said. “We don’t have many like that, so we have to make (up) for it with other stuff. I thought we did those things well tonight. We controlled the ball and kept it away from them as much as we could, but sooner or later we had to kick it to them.”

E.D. White led 21-20 at halftime after Patterson went 1-of-3 on 2-point conversions.

The Cardinals got a big stop to open the third quarter, forcing a Patterson punt.

But E.D. White fumbled the punt and Shundren Johnson recovered for the ’Jacks.

Four plays later, Landry hit Charlot for a 44-yard score to regain the lead at 26-21.

Patterson’s special teams had the next costly miscue. While blocking on a punt, the ball hit Dontrell Benjamin’s foot and E.D. White recovered at the Patterson 18-yard line. Three plays later, Charles was in the end zone again for a 28-26 Cardinals’ lead with 2:31 remaining in the quarter.

Jones got his first score for Patterson on a 2-yarder at the 9:48 mark of the fourth quarter. Patterson led 32-28 when the late game heroics took place.

Patterson will host Berwick for homecoming Friday while E.D. White steps out of district against Assumption.
