'Jacks top Erath 43-22

Patterson celebrated homecoming in style Friday with a 43-22 beat down of Erath.
D.J. Jones and Nehemiah Augustus scored two touchdowns each for Patterson (6-2, 4-0), which took sole possession of first place in District 8-3A.
Jones took the Lumberjacks’ first offense snap and dashed 81 yards for the game’s first touchdown with 8:29 remaining in the first quarter. Patterson led 7-0 and never trailed in the game.
Erath, however, tied the game at 7 on a 54-yard run by standout running back Elijah Mitchell.
Mitchell and Scott Moore came into the game with big rushing stats.
Mitchell had 1,158 yards with 21 touchdowns (18 rushing), while Moore carried 71 times for 689 yards with eight touchdowns.
The duo had some early success, but Moore left in the first quarter with an injury, and Mitchell followed early in the third quarter. Mitchell, however, had done his damage, carrying 23 times for 257 yards and a touchdown.
“The wheels came off for us tonight, losing both our backs,” Erath Coach David Comeaux said. “It’s hard to keep the ball from them (Patterson) when you don’t have your top backs.”
The Bobcats converted five of six third downs before the duo left the game.
But Patterson’s quick-strike offense was in full gear. Augustus capped a six-play, 60-yard drive with a 28-yard touchdown run with 3:43 left in the first quarter to regain the lead, 14-7.
The ‘Jacks then got a 48-yard scoring run from Jones to take a 21-10 lead into the half.
Jones took the second-half kickoff and bolted 90 yards for a touchdown and Christian Soria’s kick extended Patterson’s lead to 28-10.
Jones also carried six times for 149 yards and two touchdowns.
Mitchell answered again for Erath (5-3, 3-1) with a 69-yard touchdown run with 11:48 remaining in the quarter.
That momentum was short lived, however, because Patterson quarterback Sirbatian Charles hooked up with Augustus for an 18-yard touchdown pass with 10:31 remaining to push the lead to 35-16. Augustus had two receptions for 38 yards and a touchdown, while he rushed two times for 54 yards and two touchdowns. His second touchdown run closed out the third quarter with Patterson leading 43-22.
Charles finished the game completing five of eight passes for 95 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed 10 times for 72 yards.
He has completed 86 of 131 passes for 1,359 yards with 17 touchdowns and three interceptions this season.
“We didn’t throw it a lot tonight because a lot of the stuff they were giving us offensively called for the run,” Patterson Coach Chad Blanchard said. “We tried to get the ball to some different players in different ways tonight.”
Patterson finished with 415 yards of total offense (320 rushing and 95 passing), while Erath finished with 342 yards (321 rushing and 21 passing).
“They’re a tough team, very physical and well coached,” Blanchard said. “What they do offensively is hard to stop. That’s why they score so many points. I’m pleased that we held them to only 22 (points). I know that may sound strange, but not many teams have held them to so few.”
The Bobcats were averaging 44.2 points per game coming into Friday’s contest.
Patterson will continue district play as it travels to North Vermilion (3-5, 1-3) Friday, while Erath will host Kaplan. North Vermilion lost to E.D. White 45-20 Friday.
