Jesuit run-rules CCHS, 10-0

Staff Report

A week after taking one of Class 4A’s best, St. Michael the Archangel, to extra innings in a tight game before falling, the Central Catholic Eagles appeared primed for a close game with Class 5A power Jesuit Wednesday as the teams were scoreless after three innings.
However, Jesuit’s bats, coupled with Central Catholic walks and miscues, led to two big innings as the Blue Jays routed the Eagles, 10-0, in five innings in Metairie.
“Let me start by saying Jesuit is a very good baseball team,” Central Catholic coach Tyler Jensen said. “They obviously have a great tradition. I was disappointed in our effort.
“We were in a tight game until the bottom of the (fourth), and when we got punched in the mouth, we laid down. That was disappointing to see. I hope that we can learn a valuable lesson from this, because it was obviously a reality check. If you don’t come to the park with your best against good teams, this is what happens.”
Jesuit plated four runs in the fourth before adding six in the fifth to end the game via the mercy rule.
Of the Blue Jays runs, just five were earned.
Blake Hidalgo suffered the loss for the Eagles. In four innings, he surrendered five runs — four earned — on four hits with two walks and fanned four.
Offensively, the Eagles struggled as they were limited to one hit, a single by Stefano Guarisco in the top of the third. Guarisco finished 1-for-2 with a stolen base.
Central Catholic (13-3 overall, 3-0 in district) will return to action today. While the Eagles were scheduled to travel to face Centerville in District 7-1A action, they will be playing again in Amelia in a 4 p.m. contest due to an umpiring issue.
