MCHS 4x100-meter relay has state's top time

Staff Report

Morgan City High School’s Class 4A champion 4x100-meter relay received another honor recently as the team had the top time in the state, earning the top slot on the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s All-State Track and Field Team.
The Tigers recorded the top time at the state meet en route to winning the event in 41.42.
Morgan City’s relay consists of an all-senior group that returned three of four legs from a state-runner-up finish a year ago in Kevon Marsh, Tierell Jones and Jaylen Jones. Fellow senior Keshawn Marshall joined the relay this year.
“We went out and we worked hard. … We knew what we wanted to do (at the beginning of the year),” Morgan City track and field coach Duriel Singleton said. “We knew what we had coming back, so we just got out there and just trained and worked hard.”
While they lost to Franklin at the Foster-Perry Relays in March 42.25-42.35, Singleton said his team knew because of how talented Franklin was, if they could run with them, then they could compete with anyone.
At the Sugar Bowl meet, they took second place to McDonough 35 with a time of 42.95.
Singleton said the performance gave them more “momentum” as they headed to state later in the year, showing they could compete with “the big-time runners at the big-time schools” on that type of stage.
However, he said they had to keep working hard and remain humble because it would be easy to get arrogant after the Sugar Bowl performance.
“They worked hard,” he said. “They didn’t give up. They just kept pushing, kept pushing, and they came out All-State and with the fastest time. That’s great. Good stuff.”
McDonough 35 finished with the fifth-fastest time in the 4x100-meter relay at 41.82, while Franklin had the sixth fastest at 41.88.
As for Morgan City, Singleton also credited Trey Robin, the team’s 4x100-meter alternate, who ran a leg at the District 7-4A meet due to an injury to one of the Tigers’ relay members, allowing the Tigers to begin their journey to a state championship.
Of the relay team members, Jaylen Jones will run track and field as well as play football at Southwest Baptist University, while Marsh will play football at Pearl River Community College.
Franklin, which finished as Class 3A runner-up at the state meet, also was represented on the state team by Trevions Rouchon, who had the third-fastest 400-meter dash in 48.51, while the Hornets had the top 4x200-meter relay in 1:25.40, which also set a Class 3A record at the state meet.
The Hornets 4x400-meter relay had the fifth-fastest time at 3:19.64, which the team recorded at the state meet to win the 3A title in the event.
On the girls’ side, Hanson Memorial’s Noel Baker had the sixth-best javelin toss at 129 feet, 6 inches. That toss, recorded at the state meet, won her the 1A title.
