MCHS beats West St. Mary

Morgan City High School held off a West St. Mary fourth-quarter rally for an 81-73 victory in the first-day action at Morgan City’s Tiger Classic.
Trailing 59-39 entering the final period, West St. Mary outscored Morgan City 34-22 in the fourth quarter.
West St. Mary connected on four three pointers in the fourth quarter and 10 in all in the ball game.
Morgan City took a 15-8 lead after the first quarter and led 38-16 at the half.
Jaylen Jones led Morgan City with 27 points, while Brady Fryou had 13 and Marvin Young, 11.
Other scorers included Makye Richard, nine; Tywaun Walker, seven; Lloyd Singleton, six; and Deondre Walker and Keshawn Marshall with four apiece.
Morgan City’s meeting with West St. Mary was the second in less than a week as the Tigers also defeated West St. Mary Friday at Jeanerette High School’s tournament.
Morgan City led 13-10 after the first quarter, 22-21 at the half and 39-36 after three periods in Friday’s contest.
Morgan City had seven three-pointers in the contest, including five by Jones.
West St. Mary had eight three-pointers.
Jones led Morgan City in scoring with 17 points, while Richard also reached double figures with 13 points.
Other contributors included Walker and Fryou with eight points each and Singleton with six points.
Morgan City (3-0) will return to action today at the Tiger Classic when it faces South Lafourche in the third contest of the day.
The day’s action will begin with West St. Mary facing Central Lafourche at 5 p.m., followed by Franklin against Jeanerette.
In other first-round action Monday, South Lafourche defeated Jeanerette 65-48 and Central Lafourche defeated Franklin 80-59.
Berwick Panthers win
The Berwick Panthers started their season on a winning note with a 42-29 victory against Delcambre at Ascension Episcopal’s tournament.
Berwick coach Sean Comeaux said his team played well defensively but struggled on offense.
Audwin Williams led the Panthers with 23 points, while Donald Tillman added 10.
Berwick will return to action today when it faces Catholic High at 6 p.m. in the semifinals of the tournament.
