MCHS beats Westgate 80-72

Morgan City High School defeated Westgate 80-72 in high school basketball action in New Iberia Saturday.
Morgan City, who returned to the court for the first time in nearly two weeks, outscored Westgate 23-14 in the first quarter and 27-18 in the second quarter for a 50-32 halftime lead.
Westgate cut its deficit to 63-53 after three quarters and 19-17 in the fourth quarter for the final.
Tywuan Walker led four Tigers in double figures with 19 points.
Other scorers included Jared Singleton, 18; Taaj Daniels, 15; Makye Richard, 13; Cedric Gant, six; Clifton Escort, five; and Ke’Sean Francois, four.
Morgan City connected on nine three-pointers.
Anachack Phomthirath led Westgate with 36 points, including four three-pointers.
Westgate hit six three-pointers.
Morgan City (10-7) will return to action Tuesday when it hosts St. Martinville in a 7 p.m. contest.
Berwick falls to St. Louis
The Berwick Panthers fell to St. Louis 75-43 Wednesday on the final day of the North Vermilion Holiday Classic Tournament.
Audwin Williams led the Panthers with 12 points.
Other scorers included Josh Carver, eight; Tysin Meads, seven; Collin Louviere, six; Cody Roberie and Larenz Clark, three apiece; and Kenan Jones, two.
Berwick (11-8) will return to action Tuesday when it opens District 8-3A play with a 7:45 p.m. contest at Franklin.
Other hoops action
Tri-City area high school basketball action will resume in full swing this week.
Action will begin today as Central Catholic (9-4 overall, 1-0 in District 7-1A) and Morgan City will hit the court in girls’ basketball action.
Central Catholic will host Gueydan in a 5 p.m. district contest, while Morgan City (4-6) will travel to Plaquemine for a 5:30 p.m. nondistrict contest.
On Tuesday, Berwick’s girls (1-8, 0-2) will travel to face Franklin in a 6 p.m. District 8-3A contest.
In boys’ action Tuesday, Central Catholic (2-8) will open District 7-1A play when it travels to face Lafayette Christian in a 7 p.m. contest, while Patterson (8-3) will meet Ellender in Houma in a 7 p.m. contest.
Patterson’s girls (5-5, 2-0) won’t return to action until Friday when they host Kaplan in a 6 p.m. District 8-3A contest.
