MCHS falls to West Ouachita
The Morgan City Lady Tigers fell to West Ouachita 64-45 in Class 4A bi-district round action Thursday.
Casey Chenevert led Morgan City with 18 points, while Laqwaijha Bourgeois had 13 points and Meya Morse, 10 points.
Other scorers included Alisha Singleton and Haley Harris with two points apiece for Morgan City, the No. 24 seed.
Chenevert converted on 3-of-5 three-point attempts in the first half, which helped keep the Lady Tigers in the game.
In the first quarter, there was one tie and three lead changes.
However, West Ouachita, the No. 9 seed, capped the first period with a 10-3 run and led for the remainder of the game.
“Last night’s game was a fight,” Morgan City girls’ basketball coach Taylor Clark said. “The girls did their best but just couldn’t bring it all together at the end. Of course, as their coach, I tell them I will always take responsibility for the losses and give them credit for the wins. The West Ouachita coach out-coached me last night. My girls worked hard, and that’s all I could’ve asked from them.”
West Ouachita coach Jimbo Murphy told The Monroe News Star, “We let emotions get away from us a little at the start. The kids continued to play hard and we came out in the second half and did what we wanted to do."
Rebecca Skains led West Ouachita with 21 points and 11 rebounds.
Thursday’s game was the final one for Morgan City seniors, Samyra Toups, Chenevert and Nakerial Bourgeois.
“My seniors will be missed,” Clark said. “Last night hit them hard, but they were extremely supportive and encouraging to the upcoming seniors and teammates about next year. I personally will miss them all dearly, of course. Their energy and leadership will be greatly missed.”
West Ouachita will continue postseason play when it meets No. 8 Ellender Monday. Ellender advanced to the second round after routing No. 25 Neville, 77-45.
