Berwick forced to forfeit
upset victory
The Berwick Panthers picked up a huge upset victory in Class 3A on the field with a 10-3 victory against E.D. White in Thibodaux in 10 innings Tuesday.
However, the win will not count as Berwick baseball coach Mike Thomas said this morning the team will be forced to forfeit the win due to an error on his part in keeping starting pitcher Bradley Gray in too long.
A Louisiana High School Athletic Association rule passed last year limits a pitcher to nine innings per game.
Thomas sent Gray out to the mound in the 10th as he recorded the first two outs of the inning.
“Coach Thomas is the only one to blame for this,” Thomas said. “It is not the player’s fault.”
Thomas said he and Gray will have to sit out today’s District 8-3A contest at North Vermilion because of the mistake by Thomas.
As for the game, E.D. White scored a run in the bottom of the first, while Berwick took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth.
E.D. White tied the score at 2 in the bottom of the fourth, and the score remained the same until the top of the 10th when Berwick erupted for eight runs for a commanding 10-2 lead.
E.D. White scored a run in the bottom of the 10th for the final.
Berwick outhit E.D. White, 13-10, while Berwick committed five errors to E.D. White’s three.
Bradley Gray was originally awarded the win. In 9.2 innings, he allowed three runs — one earned — on 10 hits with one hit batter and seven strikeouts.
“Kids, they battled,” Thomas said of his team. “They played very well. This is probably one of the best games that I’ve ever been a part of, and Bradley Gray pitched his butt off.”
He said he told his team following the game that he was proud of them.
Offensively, Brandon Fryou led Berwick with a 3-for-5 performance with an RBI. Other top offensive contributors included Andrew Askew, 3-for-5, and a double; Gray 2-for-6, and a double; Cameron Wiley, 2-for-5; Logan Angeron, 1-for-4, a double and two RBIs; and D.J. Robicheaux, 1-for-5, and two RBIs.
