MCHS uses huge 4th quarter to net 1st win

HOUMA — Morgan City High School used a huge fourth quarter to earn its first win of the season, a 72-64 victory against Terrebonne at the Terrebonne Tiger Classic.
Morgan City outscored the host squad 34-12 in the final period to turn a 14-point deficit at the end of the third quarter into an eight point win.
The victory snapped a six-game losing streak to start the season for the Tigers.
Terrebonne, who led 52-38 at the end of three quarters, had trouble adjusting to Morgan City’s full-court press defense in the final period.
Terrebonne led 15-12 at the end of the first quarter and 33-26 at halftime.
Four Morgan City players scored in double figures in the win, led by 21 points from Jaylen Jones. Other double-digit scorers included Tay Green, 14; Abram Hartley, 12; and Malcolm Watkins, 11.
Other top contributors included Buddy Humphrey, 8 points, and Brady Fryou, 4.
Morgan City connected on six 3-pointers, four of those by Hartley, while Terrebonne hit eight treys.
The Tigers will return to action today when they face H.L. Bourgeois at 5 p.m., while on Saturday, Morgan City will conclude the round-robin tournament with a 5 p.m. contest against South Lafourche.
Berwick falls to Centerville
The Berwick Panthers fell behind 14-0 after the first quarter and never could recover in a 53-28 defeat to Centerville in opening round action at Centerville’s Tournament of the Teche.
Berwick was outscored in every quarter except the fourth, when they held a 12-11 scoring advantage.
The Panthers trailed 26-6 at halftime and 42-16 after three quarters.
Audwin Williams led the Panthers with 16 points, while Tim Shelby added 7.
Other scorers included Brice Benedietto and Tyvon Batiste, each 2 points; and Brandon Naverro, 1.
The Panthers (5-2) will look to bounce back today when it faces E.D. White in its tournament finale at 6:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, Berwick’s girls, who received a first-round bye in the girls’ portion of the Tournament of the Teche, will play Centerville today at 5 p.m.
Centerville advanced to the second round with a 50-48 win against Lafayette Christian.
The winner of today’s Berwick-Centerville contest will meet the winner of the H.L. Bourgeois-Franklin contest Saturday at 1:30 p.m. for the tournament title, while the losers of today’s semifinal contests will meet in the third-place game Saturday at noon.
Central Catholic
tops Comeaux
Central Catholic used a big second quarter scoring advantage to help them defeat Comeaux 57-40 at Westgate’s tournament Thursday.
While Comeaux led the Lady Eagles 13-12 after one period of play, Central Catholic responded with a 19-5 second-quarter scoring run to take a 31-18 lead into halftime.
Comeaux outscored Central Catholic 13-11 in the third quarter to trim the deficit to 42-31, while Central Catholic responded in the fourth quarter with a 15-9 scoring advantage.
Randi Brown, Meo Knight and Gee Garrett each reached double figures, while Brown recorded a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. She also recorded 6 steals, 5 assists and 2 blocks.
Knight had 14 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals; Garrett, 13 points and 7 rebounds; and Megan Landry, 9 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals, 1 assist and 1 block.
Central Catholic (3-0) will return to action Saturday when it faces McKinley at 2:30 p.m.
Patterson also will resume play at the Westgate tournament against Westgate Saturday at 10 a.m.
