Patterson defeats Berwick 49-33
The Patterson Lumberjacks topped the Berwick Panthers 49-33 in District 9-3A action Friday.
While Patterson led just 18-14 heading into halftime, the Lumberjacks outscored Berwick 16-8 in the third quarter for a 34-22 lead after three quarters.
Patterson outscored Berwick 15-11 in the fourth quarter for the final.
Both teams endured a low-scoring first quarter as Patterson outscored Berwick, 6-4.
Berwick didn’t get on the scoreboard until about the 2:16 mark via a runner by Brandon Naverro.
Both teams picked up their scoring in the second quarter as the Lumberjacks outscored the Panthers 12-10 for the four-point lead at intermission.
Mykel Jones led Patterson with 14 points, while Nehemiah Augustus had 12 points.
Other scorers for the Lumberjacks included Daylon Charlot and Kenneth Washington with seven points apiece; DJ Jones with five; and Taylan Grogan and Malik Garrett with two points each.
Berwick was led by Kenan Jones who finished perfect from the field and scored 15 points and grabbed five rebounds.
Other top contributors for Berwick included Audwin Williams with seven points and eight rebounds, and Donald Tillman had six points, three rebounds and three assists.
Berwick (10-10 overall, 1-2 in district) will return to action Tuesday when it travels to face E.D. White in its final game in the first round of district play. Junior varsity boys’ action will begin at 5 p.m. with girls’ varsity action to follow at 6 p.m. and boys’ varsity set for an approximate 7 p.m. tip.
Patterson (12-5, 2-1) also will conclude the first round of district play Tuesday when it travels to face Franklin in District 9-3A play. Junior varsity boys’ action will begin at 5 p.m., while varsity girls’ action will begin at 6 p.m. and varsity boys’ action will begin at approximately 7:30 p.m.
Morgan City knocks off
Assumption in OT
The Morgan City Tigers blew a big halftime lead to Assumption but recovered to force overtime and then knock off the Mustangs in the extra period, 72-65, in District 7-4A action in Morgan City Friday.
While Morgan City led 39-25 at the half, the Mustangs rallied in the third quarter, outscoring Morgan City 17-6 in the quarter to cut its deficit to 45-42 after three quarters.
Although Assumption would grab the lead in the fourth period, Morgan City tied the game at 59 with a late bucket while Assumption could not convert on its end in the last few seconds of regulation to force overtime.
In overtime, Morgan City outscored Assumption 13-6 for the victory.
The close game was nothing new for Morgan City as the Tigers’ first three district contests have been decided by two or less points.
Friday’s game, however, was the Tigers’ first in district that went to overtime.
While Morgan City has struggled at the free throw line this season, the Tigers connected on 18 of 25 attempts, including 7 of 9 in overtime.
Jaylen Jones, who led the Tigers with 23 points, had eight of the Tigers’ points in overtime.
The Tigers outscored Assumption 18-13 in the first quarter and extended its lead by halftime after outscoring Assumption 21-12 in the second quarter.
Makye Richard also reached double figures for the Tigers with 13 points.
Other scorers included Taaj Daniels and Lloyd Singleton with seven points apiece; Keyshawn Marshall, six points; Brady Fryou, Abram Hartley and Marvin Young, four points apiece; and Tywuan Walker and Deondre Walker, two points apiece.
Morgan City (13-7) will return to action when it hosts Ellender Friday. Junior varsity boys’ action will begin at 5 p.m., while varsity girls will follow at 6 p.m. and varsity boys’ action will conclude the night at approximately 7:30 p.m.
At the moment, Morgan City, Vandebilt Catholic and Ellender all are tied for first place in District 7-4A at 3-1 as Ellender knocked off Vandebilt 60-42 Friday. Ellender and Vandebilt Catholic both have district games Tuesday against Assumption and South Terrebonne, respectively.
CCHS edges
Highland Baptist
Central Catholic edged Highland Baptist, 48-46 in District 7-1A action in New Iberia Friday.
The game was tied at 10 after the first quarter, while Central Catholic took a 24-23 halftime lead.
Highland Baptist had tied the game at 31 after three quarters before the Eagles outscored the Bears 17-15 in the final quarter for the win.
Jalen Johnson led Central Catholic with 22 points, while Stefano Guarisco also reached double figures with 11.
Other top scorers for the Eagles included Samarick Paul with seven and Charlie Solar with six.
In junior varsity action, the Eagles routed Highland Baptist 43-17.
Elijah Swan led Central Catholic with 15 points, while Demarcus Mitchell also reached double figures with 13 points.
Central Catholic (10-10, 6-1) will continue District 7-1A action Tuesday when it hosts Vermilion Catholic at approximately 6:30 p.m.
