Senior Taylan Grogan scored 28 points to lead Patterson to a 69-62 win against Green Oaks of Shreveport in the regional round of the Class 3A playoffs Tuesday at Patterson.
The Lumberjacks (23-4), the No. 5 seed, have won 15 straight games but had their hands full with the Giants (19-9), the No. 12 seed. The visitors from north Louisiana came into the game with the reputation of long-range 3-point sharpshooters.
“We missed a lot of shots tonight,” Green Oaks Coach Joseph Anderson said. “The ball just didn’t fall for us tonight. We settled for the three when we could’ve gone to the basket and got better shots, and Patterson made us pay for our mistakes.”
Patterson led 51-37 at the start of the fourth quarter with Green Oaks heating up from 3-point land. Patterson opened with two quick baskets from Kenneth Washington and Grogan. Grogan converted a 3-point play at the free-throw line to extend the ’Jacks lead to 55-39 with 7:06 remaining.
With 6:30 left in the game, Green Oaks’ Shanon Gilliam fouled out and picked up a technical foul after knocking cups, water and etc. onto the basketball court. The Giants’ bench was called for a technical because of the disruption. Patterson, who struggled all night from the free-throw line, only made one of the technical free throws. Patterson was just 17-of-36 from the line.
“We talked about the free-throw situation, and they just have to suck it up and make them,” Patterson Coach Ryan Taylor said. “We expended a lot of energy on defense because we had to extend our D to defend their threes, and they still made a bunch late.”
Taylor said his team couldn’t relax playing a team that could shoot well like Green Oaks could.
After a D.J. Jones basket pushed Patterson’s lead to 57-39 with 6:07 left, Green Oaks’ 3-pointers started to fall. The Giants went on a run before another Jones basket gave Patterson a 60-45 lead with 4:45 to play.
“When a team shoots the ball that well, the game isn’t over,” Taylor said.
Green Oaks’ leading scorer, Deonte Crawford, kept the Giants close with 12 fourth-quarter points. He led the Giants with 20 points, while Jonathan Bell was also in double figures with 14.
But Patterson made enough free throws in the final minutes to hold on for the win. Other top scorers for the ’Jacks were Jones with 13, Nehemiah Augustus, 12; Jordan Butler, seven; Washington, six; and Kobe Gray, three.
Patterson will travel to Monroe Friday to face Wossman High School in a 7 p.m. contest. Wossman beat Glen Oaks 58-52 to advance to the quarterfinals.
