Annual Jimmy Johnson Free Basketball Clinic a success
The Jimmy Johnson Free Basketball Clinic was held Saturday at Morgan City High School with 25 youth participants.
Johnson started the clinic 17 years ago to teach children the basic fundamentals of basketball. He also saw the opportunity to give children some school supplies for the upcoming school year.
This year the 100 Black Men of St. Mary Parish, a non-profit organization that mentors children (especially the under privileged), sponsored the camp. With the backing of the 100 Black Men, the campers were also provided with mentoring sessions, in addition to personal hygiene kits, said Demetrius Wilson, 100 Black Men health and wellness coordinator.
Speakers include Attorney Ed Jones of Patterson, Patterson Councilmen Travis Darnell and Hendrix Broussard of Baton Rouge. Topics included the importance of education, hygiene and living a tobacco free life.
About 20 volunteers helped with the camp including those with high school- and collegiate-basketball skills.
