Norwood's bid for Olympics in 400 ends after injury

Staff Report

Vernon Norwood’s bid for a spot on the U.S. Olympic squad in the 400-meter dash came to a quick and disappointing ending Friday at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials as the former Morgan City High and LSU standout pulled up with an injury during preliminary action at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field, according to LSU’s Sports Information website.
Norwood, who runs professionally for New Balance, was one of 29 competitors who competed in the 400-meter dash.
Norwood came into the trials with the seventh-best mark, having run a 45 flat.
U.S. Olympic qualifiers in the event were LaShawn Merritt, who won Sunday’s final with a time of 43.97; Gil Roberts, who took second place at 44.73; and David Verburg, third at 44.82.
