Patterson, Morgan City 10s are 1-1 at regional

Patterson’s and Morgan City’s 10-year-old All-Stars each finished 1-1 this weekend at the Louisiana Dixie Youth AAA (Minors) North Regional Tournament.
After Patterson fell 17-2 in three innings to the Shreveport Americans in its opener, the squad bounced back to hold off Moss Bluff 11-10 in an elimination contest.
Patterson will continue play in the elimination bracket today when it meets South Sabine at 5 p.m. at the Bayou Vista Community Center.
In Saturday’s game, Patterson took a 2-0 lead after the top of the first inning, but Shreveport kept the Tri-City area squad off the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest.
Shreveport took a 6-2 lead after an inning and extended it to 7-2 after two innings before erupting for 10 runs in the bottom of the third to end the ball game via mercy rule.
Kaden Samuels suffered the loss for Patterson, surrendering five runs in a third of an inning.
No other stats were available for Patterson.
On Sunday, Patterson bounced back, rallying to overtake and then holding off Moss Bluff.
While Patterson trailed 7-2 in the fourth inning, the squad connected on two grand slams in the inning — an inside-the-park home run by Tylon Walton and an out-of-the-park home run by Drake Burgess.
The two home runs were part of a nine-run frame that helped Patterson take an 11-7 lead.
However, Moss Bluff didn’t go down easily, and Patterson ended the game when Burgess struck out a Moss Bluff batter, while the visitors from the Lake Charles area had the tying run at third base.
Burgess earned the win in relief as he pitched three innings.
Dylan Fabre started for Patterson and pitched the first three innings.
Morgan City started the tournament with a 12-0 win against Moss Bluff in four innings Saturday before falling to the Shreveport Americans 18-7 Sunday.
In Saturday’s win against Moss Bluff, Dylan Cornes and Caleb Menina combined for a one-hitter.
Cornes pitched the first three innings and surrendered no runs on no hits with one walk and fanned four.
Menina pitched the final frame and surrendered a hit, hit a batter and fanned three.
Randy Fontenot led Morgan City with a 2-for-3 performance with four RBIs and a double, while Jacob Blum finished 2-for-2 with two doubles and three RBIs.
Other top contributors included Dakota Gibson, 1-for-2, a double and three RBIs; Menina, 1-for-2, a double and an RBI; and Drew Rock and Andy Gros, each 1-for-2.
In Sunday’s 18-7 loss to Shreveport, Morgan City coach Jeff Blum said his team had to battle tough field conditions because of the inclement weather.
They also struggled at times on the mound, issuing a combined 11 walks, hit two batters while committing five errors defensively.
Shreveport had 11 hits in the game.
Cornes suffered the loss for Morgan City. In 2.2 innings, he surrendered seven runs on six hits with five walks and fanned two.
Offensively, Morgan City pounded out 11 hits, led by Blum’s 2-for-3 performance with a double and two RBIs.
Other top contributors included Fontenot and Rock, each 2-for-4 with an RBI; Menina, 1-for-2, an RBI; Cornes, 1-for-3, an RBI; and Mekhi Branton, 2-for-2.
Morgan City will face Franklinton Americans in an elimination contest today at 5 p.m. at the Bayou Vista Community Center.
St. Mary Central wins
tournament opener
St. Mary Central’s 10-year-old All-Stars had their first day of the Louisiana Dixie Youth AAA (Minors) South Regional Tournament rained out, and after winning its opener Saturday, had Sunday’s action postponed until today.
St. Mary Central defeated Franklinton Nationals 9-7 in its tournament opener Saturday.
Ross Thomas earned the win for St. Mary. In five innings, he surrendered three runs — one earned — on six hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
In relief, Clay Menard pitched an inning and surrendered four runs — three earned — on five hits with three strikeouts.
Offensively, Thomas and Owen Thorguson each finished 2-for-2, while Hayden Landry was 2-for-3.
Other top contributors included Carter Williams, 1-for-3, a double; Brett Bearb, 1-for-1; and Jackson Thorguson and Jude Vasquez, each 1-for-3.
St. Mary Central was scheduled to play West Monroe North today at noon and will play a second game later in the day. The time of the second game will be determined based on the result of St. Mary Central’s first game today.
