Teacher accused of having sex with student
DESTREHAN (AP) — St. Charles Parish sheriff’s deputies say a 34-year-old teacher at Destrehan High School has been arrested for allegedly having sexual contact with a 16-year-old student.
Capt. Patrick Yoes said in a written statement that Shelley Dufresne, of Montz, was arrested about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday on a warrant on one count of carnal knowledge of a juvenile.
Deputies say school officials reported the incident to the sheriff’s office on Friday after the alleged victim reportedly bragged to other students that he was having sexual relationships with teachers.
Authorities say the incident with Dufresne allegedly occurred in early September at a home in Montz.

Lafayette man sentenced in investment scam
LAFAYETTE (AP) — A former financial services salesman has been sentenced to more than 10 years in federal prison for his role in defrauding Lafayette residents of more than $6 million, costing many of them their life savings.
U.S. District Judge Richard Haik gave 45-year-old Richard Buswell a 126-month prison term on Tuesday and ordered him to pay restitution of $6.3 million to his victims.
Buswell also is scheduled to be sentenced in December for his role in selling synthetic marijuana through the Curious Goods chain of smoke shops, a criminal case that snared several other defendants.
Buswell pleaded guilty to both the investment scheme and Curious Goods charges in July 2013.

Baton Rouge port to get LNG facility
BATON ROUGE (AP) — The Port of Baton Rouge will get its first natural gas liquefaction and fueling facility in 2015.
Houston-based Waller Marine, Inc. and Omaha-based Tenaska NG Fuels, LLC announced Tuesday Tenaska Bayou LNG will be built on approximately 80 acres at the Baton Rouge port.
The facility will aim to provide LNG and compressed natural gas as a lower-cost and clean-burning alternative for high-horsepower marine, transportation and natural gas and oil exploration and production industries throughout the region.
Officials say the facility will initially be capable of producing 200,000 gallons of LNG daily, with intentions to expand.
Construction is expected to begin in 2015, and could last for 18 to 24 months officials said.
Officials have planned for commercial operation to begin during the first quarter of 2017.

State to pay exonerated man $330,000
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Four months after he was released from prison, where he was confined almost 17 years for an attempted rape that he didn’t commit, a state judge has ordered the state to pay Nathan Brown $330,000 — the maximum Louisiana allows from its wrongful conviction compensation fund.
Brown appeared Tuesday before Judge Ray Steib of Jefferson Parish.
“Mr. Brown, I’m sure that the money can’t adequately compensate you for 17 years of your life,” Steib said in wishing him luck.
The now-40-year-old Brown spent 16 years, 10 months and 18 days in prison before he was released June 25. DNA test results proved what he’s always insisted: He was not the man who the victim said attacked her outside her Metairie apartments on Aug. 7, 1997.

Barksdale AFB: Neglect leads
to dog’s death
SHREVEPORT (AP) — Heat stroke that resulted after his handler left him unattended in a car on a hot August day killed an Air Force security K-9, a Barksdale Air Force Base spokesman said.
“A thorough investigation found that Caro’s Aug. 9 death was due to handler negligence,” base spokesman, 2nd Lt. Chris Sullivan, said. “His handler, a member of the 2nd Security Forces Squadron, unintentionally contributed to the death by leaving (Caro) alone in the vehicle for approximately two hours after the shift was completed.”
The National Weather Service said temperatures that day ranged from a low of 77 to a high of 95 degrees.
Sullivan said the handler, whose name has not been released, has been removed from his position and faces other disciplinary action.
A memorial service and burial for Caro, a 7-year-old German shepherd who sniffed out explosives, was held Aug. 15.

Candidate accused of impersonating an officer
SUNSET (AP) — Authorities say 55-year-old Luis Padilla is accused of pretending to be the Sunset police chief, a job he once held and one he is trying to regain in the Nov. 4 election.
Padilla was booked Monday on a charge of impersonating a peace officer.
Sunset police say Padilla allegedly approached a man in a parking lot on Saturday, falsely identified himself as the chief of police, flashed a badge and then questioned the man about what he was doing in the area.
The real police chief of Sunset, Alexcie Guillory, said he had no idea why Padilla allegedly approached the other man.
Padilla was police chief of the town from 1999 to 2002, when Guillory ousted him.
It was unclear whether Padilla has an attorney.
