2 women stabbed in Bourbon Street nightclub
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans police say two women, ages 35 and 22, are hospitalized after being stabbed by a woman described as a stranger who bumped into them in a Bourbon Street nightclub.
Police spokesman Frank Robertson says the 35-year-old told investigators she corrected the stranger, who began yelling profanities. She says a fight began, the woman pulled something from a boot and stabbed them both, then ran away.
The 35-year-old told police she realized she’d been stabbed when she saw her friend fall.
The wanted woman is described as black, 5-foot-7, with a medium build. She was wearing a black top with straps, black pants and red-and-black boots.
Police have surveillance video of the incident on YouTube and are asking for tips. Tipsters can get a reward of up to $2,500.
Sunoco spill revised up
to 189,000 gallons
MOORINGSPORT (AP) — Oil is flowing again through a 1,000-mile pipeline that broke in northwest Louisiana nearly four weeks ago.
Sunoco Logistics Partners LP spokesman Jeff Shields said the total spill is now estimated at 189,000 gallons. That’s up 21,000 gallons from the previous estimate. Sheilds says the partnership got a more accurate estimate after refilling the Mid-Valley Pipeline.
Shields says the federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration is letting the Philadelphia-based partnership operate the pipeline at 80 percent of maximum pressure during the investigation of what caused the break.
The oil spread 4.2 miles from the break into Tete Bayou, which feeds into Caddo Lake.
Craig Romero new
director of Port of Iberia
NEW IBERIA (AP) — The Port of Iberia has hired former state senator and Iberia Parish president Craig Romero as its new executive director.
The three-year, $115,000 contract will begin Nov. 17.
Former Executive Director Roy Pontiff retired in August after 17 years.
The board voted 7-0 at a special meeting Friday to hire Romero.
Romero agreed to step down from Frank’s International NV, an oil services company where he has worked for 20 years. He also must stop looking for new insurance contracts, though he may continue to get income from policies he already has written.
Soldier killed in Afghanistan to have memorial
DERIDDER (AP) — Friends of a soldier killed in Afghanistan plan to install a black granite memorial in a DeRidder park.
One of the organizers, Reagan Pope, said Sgt. 1st Class Andrew T. Weathers was loved in the community and his friends want him to be remembered. He attended school in DeRidder.
Weathers died Sept. 30 from wounds suffered when his team came under small-arms fire two days earlier.
His friends have raised nearly $5,000 for the memorial. A bronze plaque engraved with his name and the mottoes of the special forces and his unit will be mounted on a polished granite column in West Park.
Architects finish design
of downtown BR library
BATON ROUGE (AP) — Architects have finished designing downtown Baton Rouge’s 50,000-square-foot River Center branch but construction documents still have to be finished before companies can bid on the project.
The planned downtown translucent “Library of the Future” building will cost about $19 million. It will be located amid some of downtown Baton Rouge’s most eye-catching architecture, such as the Old State Capitol and the 19th Judicial District Courthouse.
Architect Rex Cabaniss said the library will be the center showpiece of downtown.
Man to be tried for manslaughter in teen’s death
LAROSE (AP) — Lafourche Parish prosecutors say a man originally charged with negligent homicide in a June 5 shooting in Larose will be prosecuted for manslaughter next year.
District Attorney Cam Morvant II said the trial of 20-year-old Neely Gardner of Galliano is scheduled for Feb. 24, 2015, before Judge Walter Lanier.
Gardner is charged in the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Braxton Bourda of Larose. Authorities say Bourda was shot in the face while riding his bicycle.
Gardner’s attorney, John Thomas, says in court documents the shooting was an accident.
Manslaughter carries a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison, compared to negligent homicide’s maximum sentence of five years.
Gardner is in the Lafourche Parish jail on a $150,000 bond.
1 dies, 1 wounded in drive-by
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Police say one man died and another was injured in a drive-by shooting early today in the New Orleans Warehouse District.
Officers said the shooting happened around 1 a.m. at the corner of Calliope and Annunciation streets.
Investigators say the 21-year-old man who was wounded says he and another man were driving in an SUV when a vehicle pulled up alongside and gunshots were fired.
The injured man drove to a local hospital, where his 25-year-old companion died from multiple gunshot wounds.
Police did not identify either victim of specify the condition of the man who survived.
No arrests have been made.
