Bill McCarty’s announcement for the St. Mary Parish School Board follows.
I am Bill McCarty, candidate for re-election for the St. Mary Parish School Board, District 9. I am a lifelong resident of Morgan City and a graduate of Morgan City High School. My wife, Julie, is also a lifelong resident of Morgan City who now teaches 8th grade English at Morgan City Junior High. We have two children, Jaylen Jones, a senior at Morgan City High and Jill McCarty, a freshman at MCHS. My dad, Philip McCarty, taught for 30 years in our St. Mary Parish system before retiring in 1990.
I attended St. Mary public schools from elementary through high school. As a 1988 Top Five graduate of MCHS, I was well prepared for college. I graduated in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in business – law option from Nicholls State University. Currently, I am the president of WHM Services, an oilfield brokerage and service company based here in Morgan City.
Prior to my election to the St. Mary Parish School Board in 2006, I served on numerous boards and committees. Some of these included the board of trustees for Pharr Chapel Methodist Church, board of commissioners Hospital District 2 (Teche Regional), and the St. Mary Parish Boat Landing Committee. I continue to serve as the chairman of the Morgan City Board of Adjustment. My voting record on this board is a shining example of using common sense for the good of the community.
Education in Louisiana today is undergoing tremendous change. It is important that school board members are well informed about these latest revisions so that the decisions made are in compliance with these laws; I take this responsibility very seriously. I have attended many Leadership Institute classes provided by the St. Mary Parish School Board to stay abreast of these changes. As a result, I have been recognized as a “Distinguished School Board Member” by the Louisiana Department of Education and the LSBA.
Our teachers, principals and central office staff are dedicated professionals who are committed to the education of children in our parish. My obligation to support them is well documented in my voting record. St. Mary Parish is currently a “B” school district. Our cohort graduation rates continue to increase, as do our school performance scores. We currently have five “B” schools in the Morgan City area, up from one “B” and six “C” schools four years ago. I pledge my support to make our parish an “A” school district in the near future.
During my two terms, our District III Maintenance Committee has voted to lower the millage rates for the taxpayers of District III. We have been able to fund capital projects such as new libraries at Morgan City High School and Morgan City Junior High School, as well as enhancing the technology in our classrooms while reserving funds for renovations at Maitland, Shannon and Norman. At the same time, residents of Morgan City have paid a lower school tax rate than they did 10 years prior. I look forward to continuing this progress for the next four years.
The polling places in District 9 are Morgan City High School, St. Mary Parish Health Unit Building on David Drive, J.B. Maitland Elementary School and the School Board Office on Onstead Street.
I am 44 years old, in great health and energetic. I will continue to be hard working, independent, open minded and available to everyone. I look forward to continuing to serve you as your District 9 member of the St. Mary Parish School Board. My telephone number is 312-9383. Please call with any questions or concerns. Thank you for voting for No. 118 on Nov. 4.
