Senate election, law enforcement tax top ballot

Polls open at 7 a.m. Saturday for elections ranging from a U.S. Senate runoff to a sales tax supporting local law enforcement.
Registrar of Voters Jolene Holcombe said polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and advised voters to bring picture identification.
Issues on the ballot include the U.S. Senate runoff; 16th Judicial District Judge, Division G runoff; Justice of Peace runoffs in Wards 5, 7 and 10; Town of Baldwin Police Chief runoff; and the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement District one-half percent sales tax proposition.

Election results can be viewed in real-time via the GeauxVote Mobile app and the Secretary of State’s website, www.sos.la.gov.
A total of 2,776 people in St. Mary Parish cast votes by the end of early voting Nov. 29, Holcombe said. Early voting began Nov. 22.
On Saturday, 510 voters cast their ballots with 220 people voting in Franklin and 290 people voting in Morgan City.
As of Saturday, 1,414 Democrats voted; 1,010 Republicans voted; and 352 no party voters cast ballots. A total of 1,986 white voters have cast ballots; 747 black voters have cast ballots; and 43 voters of other races have cast ballots. Further, voters were 1,296 men and 1,480 women.
There are 33,506 voters registered in St. Mary Parish for this election, according to the Secretary of State’s website. Of them, there are 16,404 Democrats, 8,148 Republicans and 8,954 registered as something other than the two major parties.
