The Patterson Volunteer Fire Department received a call at 8:19 a.m. today reporting a garbage truck on fire on U.S. 90 between Red Cypress Road and Todd Subdivision, Fire Chief Sherel Martin said. Upon arrival, fire was coming out of the cab of the truck, Martin said. Firefighters responded to the scene with two engine trucks and one rescue truck along with 10 volunteer firefighters. The fire appeared to have started in the cab of the truck by the engine compartment, the chief said. As of about 9:20 a.m. today, the fire was out and personnel were working to reopen U.S. 90 westbound in Patterson, which was closed too, Martin said. No injuries were reported, and the cab of the truck is a total loss, Martin said. Firefighters were concerned that the heat of the fire could spread the fire to the area of the truck where garbage is kept, Martin said. As of this morning, firefighters were monitoring the situation, he said.
