Cajuns prepping for Saturday's R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl

Staff Report

With the 2016 R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl only 48 hours away, the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns football team wrapped up its second practice in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome Thursday.
The Cajuns will face Southern Miss in an 8 p.m. kickoff Saturday. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN. Fans also can catch the broadcast on the WatchESPN app.
Among the Cajuns are three local players, Patterson High alum Tre’maine Lightfoot, Morgan City High alum Darryl Johnson and Central Catholic High alum Tanner Wiggins.
Lightfoot, a redshirt senior linebacker, leads the team with 95. In 12 games, he has 43 solo stops and 52 assists. Among his tackles are five for a loss of 12 yards with one sack. He also has broken up one pass, had one quarterback hurry and forced two fumbles.
Johnson is a redshirt freshman defensive lineman, while Wiggins is a true freshman linebacker.
Thursday, the Ragin’ Cajuns underwent a 15-period practice after holding a 21 period practice Wednesday in the dome.
Select members also took part in media day before the seniors made a trip to the Children’s Hospital of New Orleans to visit patients and drop off gifts.
Led by first-year head coach Jay Hopson, Southern Miss finished the regular season with a 6-6 overall record and a 4-4 record in Conference USA. This will be the Golden Eagles’ fifth appearance in the New Orleans Bowl.
With head coach Mark Hudspeth at the helm, Louisiana posted a regular-season record of 6-6 overall and a 5-3 record in the Sun Belt Conference. This also will mark the Ragin’ Cajuns’ fifth appearance in the past six years in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl.
