LSU offensive coordinator Cam Cameron treated for cancer and is continuing job

LSU offensive coordinator Cam Cameron said Friday that has been treated successfully for prostate cancer and plans to maintain his regular coaching duties this season.
“I’m fine. My health is good,” the 54-year-old Camron said after practice Friday. “I’ve been given a clean bill of health. I’ve been involved throughout the entire training camp and I’m looking forward to the season.”
Cameron has been the offensive coordinator at LSU for the past two seasons and has also spent numerous seasons coaching in the NFL with several clubs, most recently with the Baltimore Ravens.
Cameron, who also is a skin cancer survivor, said he had “a procedure” a few weeks ago.
“It’s something we didn’t overdo. It was an early positive prognosis and it turned out to be that,” Cameron said. “We didn’t overreact to it. We just handled it in a very professional manner. Certain things, you just got to take care of business, get the reports and move on, and it’s positive. It’s good.
“The support from this program and our players, coach Miles and our staff, I’ve never experienced anything quite like it,” Cameron added. “I think that’s been a big part of how this thing has progressed in such a positive way.”
LSU opens its season Sept. 5 at home against McNeese State of the second-tier Football Championship Subdivision.
“He’s been involved in everything that we’ve done,” said head coach Les Miles, an old friend of Cameron since the two worked together as assistants at Michigan under Bo Schembechler.
Cameron said he’s still going through some “minor recovery stuff,” but stressed, “I’ve been at practice. I’ve been at all the scrimmages. I’m in the press box in game day anyway. ... Very, very few limitations and I would think I would be completely, 100 percent by Monday.”
