2 arrested on drug charges after search

Two people were arrested Monday on drug charges after police conducted a search warrant at a Morgan City residence, Morgan City Assistant Police Chief Mark Griffin Jr. said in a news release.
—Shekita M. Hayes, 24, of Apple Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 6:59 p.m. Monday for possession of Schedule II Oxycodone, possession of Schedule III Acetaminophen/Codeine, two counts of possession of a Legend Drug without a prescription (Cyclobenzaprine and Promethazine), possession of drug paraphernalia, violation of uniformed controlled dangerous substance law (drug free school zone).
—Morris Hatcher, 26, of Apple Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 6:59 p.m. Monday for possession of Schedule II Oxycodone, possession of a Schedule III Acetaminophen/Codeine, two counts of possession of a Legend Drug (Promethazine and Cyclobenzaprine); possession of drug paraphernalia, violation of uniformed controlled dangerous substance law (drug free school zone).
Morgan City police detectives conducted a search warrant at an Apple Street residence in regards to an investigation into the illegal sales of narcotics from the residence, Griffin said. Investigators entered the residence with assistance from the St. Mary Parish Narcotics Task Force and identified suspects in the investigation as Hatcher and Hayes, both residents, Griffin said.
During the search of the residence, detectives located items of drug paraphernalia along with Oxycodone and Acetaminophen/Codeine, Griffin said. Detectives also recovered prescription medications that required a valid prescription, which the suspects could not provide, Griffin said.
The residence is within the prescribed “Drug Free School Zone” area near an elementary school, therefore the suspects were additionally charged, Griffin said. They were jailed with no bail set yet.
Griffin reported the following arrests:
—Herman J. Butler, 27, of Patterson, was arrested at 3:21 p.m. Monday on a warrant for failure to pay probation fee for possession of marijuana.
Butler was transported to the Morgan City Police Department Jail and booked on an outstanding warrant for the Sixth Ward City Court of Morgan City. He was jailed and later posted $175 cash bail.
—Dava C. Leonard, 33, of Sixth Street in Berwick, was arrested at 8 p.m. Monday for theft by shoplifting, possession of Schedule IV Xanax and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Officers were dispatched to a Marguerite Street pharmacy in regard to a shoplifter. Officers arrived and were advised of a woman who was acting suspicious in the store and suspected of attempting to steal items and leave the store, Griffin said.
The suspect, Leonard, was detained and found to have concealed two bottles of perfume and fingernails, Griffin said. She was stopped as she attempted to leave the store with the items which were valued at less than $100, Griffin said. Leonard was placed under arrest and upon her arrest, Xanax was located hidden inside a small flashlight on her, Griffin said. She was jailed.
—Callum J. Brown, 26, of Morgan City, was arrested at 1:47 a.m. today for no driver’s license, speeding 62 mph/35 mph zone and red light violation.
A patrolling officer observed a speeding vehicle traveling on La. 182 and clocked the vehicle at 62 mph in a 35 mph zone, Griffin said. The vehicle was observed failing to stop at a red light displayed at La. 182 and Martin Luther King Boulevard. The vehicle was stopped and the driver, Brown, identified. Brown was jailed.
Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported the following arrest:
—Alicia M. Moxley, 31, of the 300 block of Wise Street in Patterson, was arrested at 7:10 p.m. Monday on warrants for operating a vehicle while intoxicated and careless operation of a motor vehicle with a crash. She was released on bail.
St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert reported responding to 40 complaints in the parish and reported no arrests in east St. Mary Parish.
Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle reported no arrests.
