Morgan City officer stable, driver charged with DWI
The man whose pickup truck struck a Morgan City police unit Friday causing serious injuries to Sgt. Janada Anslum was charged with intoxicated driving, state police said.
Sgt. Paul Vankerkhove, of Troop I, said Nunsie Jett, 48, of Morgan City, was charged in the 9:20 a.m. crash Friday. In addition to the DWI, he was charged with careless operation and negligent injuring.
Jett was admitted to Teche Regional Medical Center in Morgan City, while Anslum was sent by AirMed to Thibodaux and then transported by ground to New Orleans where she is in stable condition.
Anslum, who also serves as the department’s DARE officer, has 16 broken ribs, two fractured vertebrae, a lung injury and a head laceration, according to Capt. James Blair. Anslum is in stable condition and was moved to a regular room Sunday at University Hospital in New Orleans, he said. Doctors are contemplating surgery to stabilize her rib cage, Blair said.
Anslum was in her unit on U.S. 90, wearing her seatbelt and bullet-proof vest, when her vehicle was struck from behind by Jett’s F250, Blair said.
She was at the city limits attempting to slow traffic in the westbound lanes heading toward a single-vehicle motorcycle accident on the U.S. 90 bridge when her vehicle was struck.
The officer was extricated from her vehicle and taken by ambulance to PHI in Amelia where Acadian Ambulance AirMed transported her Thibodaux Regional Medical Center. She later was taken by ground ambulance to New Orleans, Blair said.
Blair said Anslum, like all Morgan City officers, had taken the Below 100 training, which he credited with aiding her survival in the crash.
Below 100’s goal is to reduce officer in-line deaths to below 100 annually through integrating various tenants into police culture such as wearing a seat belt and vest, watching driving speed, prioritizing what is important and being mindful of complacency, according to the program website.
Cards, letters and well-wishes can be sent to the Morgan City Police Department. They will be forwarded to Anslum, Blair said.
