Teen charged in armed robbery

A Morgan City teen was charged with armed robbery Friday after he allegedly robbed someone at gunpoint on Federal Avenue, according to Morgan City police.
DeShawn Sylvester, 17, of Short Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 5:30 p.m. Friday on the charges of armed robbery, aggravated burglary, possession of Schedule II crack cocaine and illegal carrying of a weapon with a violent crime or controlled dangerous substance.
At about 3:30 p.m. Friday, the Morgan City Police Department received a complaint of an armed robbery in the area of the 700 block of Federal Avenue. Officers arrived and spoke to the victim who described the suspect and gave information on the items taken.
Sylvester allegedly pointed a gun at the victim and took roughly $700 in cash and a cellphone, police said.
During the investigation, information was received that the possible suspect was in a vehicle on Brashear Avenue. A vehicle matching the description given was stopped in the area of Brashear Avenue and Victor II Boulevard. Officers located Sylvester, who was a passenger in the vehicle, police said.
Sylvester also matched the description given by the victim and was in possession of the items that were allegedly taken, police said. Officers also located a firearm and suspected crack cocaine in Sylvester’s possession, police said. Sylvester was jailed. The armed robbery is still under investigation, police said.
