Assumption High School may have shut out Morgan City, 58-0, in the Tigers’ season finale Friday in Morgan City, but the Tigers put up a fight in their final game of the 2016 season.
They just simply could not overcome missed opportunities to score in Assumption territory and its own turnovers.
Assumption scored two quick touchdowns in the game’s first five minutes for a 14-0 lead. The touchdowns came via a Melvin Young 28-yard run on the second play of Assumption’s first offensive series and a Young 41-yard punt return with 7 minutes remaining after Morgan City’s second offensive drive stalled.
While Morgan City had the ball in a fourth-down-and-six situation at the Assumption 36 on its next drive, quarterback Isaiah Escort’s pass completion to Ethan Scioneaux came up a yard short of a first down, and Assumption took over.
While the Tigers forced Assumption to punt on its next drive and moved the ball down to the Assumption 8, the Tigers again could not find the end zone. On third-and-goal from the 8, Escort’s pass was intercepted by Tyrese Gilton and returned near midfield.
While Morgan City’s Scott Comeaux recovered a fumble off a bad snap on the Mustangs’ ensuing drive, Morgan City was forced to punt soon after.
Assumption cashed in for its third score of the game on the ensuing possession with a three-play, 65-yard drive capped by Young’s 58-yard run. Assumption’s two-point pass was good for a 22-0 Mustang lead in the second quarter.
Morgan City stopped Assumption later in the second quarter on the 1-yard line when Young fumbled and Morgan City recovered.
However, one play later, Kalen Hillen was tackled in the end zone with 40 seconds remaining for an Assumption safety and a 24-0 lead.
Morgan City forced another turnover on the first play of Assumption’s next drive when Nick Brown picked off Assumption quarterback Tijah Parker’s pass and returned it to the Mustangs’ 22-yard line.
However, a play later, Escort’s pass was picked off by Gilton and returned 92 yards for a touchdown. The point-after-attempt was no good, but Assumption led 30-0 with 13 seconds remaining.
The Mustangs added two third-quarter touchdowns and two more in the fourth for the final margin.
Assumption had 373 yard of total offense (303 rushing and 70 passing).
Young led Assumption’s ground game with 10 carries for 136 yards and two touchdowns, while Parker completed 2 of 5 passes for 54 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
His top receiver was Brad Hill Jr., who had a 46-yard touchdown reception for his lone catch.
Morgan City totaled 184 yards of offense (96 rushing and 88 passing).
Scioneaux led Morgan City’s run game with 13 carries for 62 yards, while Hillen had 12 carries for 45 yards.
Alex Brocato, who also saw time at quarterback, led Morgan City through the air as he completed 5 of 7 passes for 83 yards.
His top receiver was Hillen, who hauled in two catches for 42 yards.
Morgan City concludes its season with a 3-7 record, including an 0-5 mark in District 7-4A action.
Meanwhile, Assumption earned the outright District 7-4A title with Friday’s victory. The Mustangs finished the regular season with a 6-4 overall record and a 5-0 record in district play. The Mustangs, the No. 16 seed in the Class 4A playoffs, will host No. 17 Carver Collegiate Academy Friday.
