Patterson falls in 10 innings
Pine Prairie drove in the winning run on a single in the top of the 10th to edge Patterson, 6-5, in action Monday played at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s baseball stadium.
While Patterson took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first and added another run in the bottom of the fourth, Pine Prairie rallied in the top of the sixth to tie the game at four.
Each team plated a run in the eighth inning.
“This is one we feel like we gave away,” Patterson head coach Ryan Jensen said. “We jumped out on them in the first inning and instead of putting them away when we had chances in the early innings, we let them hang around, and it came back to bite us late. Brennan (Gouaux) did a great job on the mound for us, and our defense was about as good as it could be for the first five innings.
“Unfortunately, in the sixth inning, we made a few throwing errors and didn’t do a very good job of keeping our composure. They tied it up, and we once again had chances to win it late but just couldn’t get a hit with runners in scoring position. There were a lot of good things to take away from our effort, and we’ll continue to build on them, but it sure felt like we should have walked out of there with a W,” Jensen said.
Each team committed four errors.
Patterson left nine runners on base, while Pine Prairie stranded seven.
Gouaux received a no-decision as he pitched the first 8.2 innings and surrendered five runs — three earned — on six hits with one walk and fanned four.
Joel Singleton suffered the loss in relief. In 1.1 innings, he surrendered one unearned run on two hits.
Singleton led Patterson with a 3-for-5 performance with an RBI and a run, while Jake Lagrange was 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run and two stolen bases.
Other top contributors for the Lumberjacks included Gouaux, 2-for-5, a run and a stolen base; Jamey Fabre, 1-for-4, an RBI and a run; and Blake Dryer, an RBI, a run and a stolen base.
Patterson (4-7) will return to action Friday when it hosts Baker in a makeup contest at Baker. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
On Saturday, the Lumberjacks will play in Ascension Episcopal’s tournament with a 3 p.m. contest vs. Port Barre and an 8 p.m. matchup against False River.
Tigers finish 1-2 in CCHS tournament
Morgan City finished 1-2 in the Central Catholic tournament, defeating Loreauville and falling to Ascension Catholic and Houma Christian.
On Saturday, Morgan City edged Loreauville 5-4.
Caleb Landry’s lone hit in the game was the game-winner for Morgan City.
Offensively, Ross Albritton, Matt Lorenzo, Morrquis Charles and Brady Fryou each had a hit as well.
Ethan Scioneaux earned the win with a complete game. He surrendered four runs on two hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.
Against Ascension Catholic, the Tigers fell 6-5.
Lorenzo suffered the loss in relief of Rhett Fryou.
Fryou surrendered five runs on five hits with four walks and one strikeout during his time on the mound.
Offensively, Evan Stadalis and Brady Fryou each had two hits.
Against Houma Christian, the Tigers fell 5-4 in nine innings as the Tigers’ Phillip Hutchinson walked in the winning run after the Tigers were forced to load the bases with the winning run on third base and only one out in the bottom of the ninth.
Colby Glatter suffered the loss for the Tigers in relief of Charles.
Offensively, Brady Fryou, Lorenzo and Malik Phillips each had a hit.
“All three games, pitchers gave us the chance to win,” Morgan City coach Tim Vidos said. “Mental errors hurt us in all three. We are still not getting production at the plate. If we hit the ball, then we can overcome even the mental errors being committed.”
Morgan City (3-8) will return to action later this week when they participate in New Iberia’s tournament.
