Berwick High School’s Larenz Clark inked with East Texas Baptist University to play football on National Signing Day Wednesday.
Clark chose the Marshall, Texas, school over offers from Northwestern Oklahoma State and Henderson State.
He said he visited all three schools but said he “felt more at home” at East Texas Baptist.
“Also, my cousin is signing with me, so it’s good to go down there with somebody you’re really close too,” he said.
In addition to his cousin, Central Catholic High School standout Samarick Paul signing with East Texas Baptist Wednesday, Clark also noted Patterson High alum and East Texas Baptist assistant coach Tarence Calais, who he knows, as an influence on him.
Clark was a second-team All-District 8-3A selection as a senior for Berwick as both a kick returner/punt returner and a defensive back.
He said the coaching staff at East Texas Baptist has talked to him about playing cornerback and safety as well as returning kicks and punts.
His goal is to lead the conference in interceptions and deflections and other defensive categories as a freshman. He said he would like to lead the defense there like he said he did at Berwick.
Berwick High School head football coach Eric Holden said Clark has grown a lot in the head coach’s short time at Berwick.
“When I got here, he was real raw,” Holden said. “(He) had a great work ethic, though, and he really just applied himself, though, and you saw it as you watched us throughout the season. He got better each week. He became a leader. He became a guy who never backed down from a challenge. I can’t tell you how proud I am. He’s done great this year as a leader for me on the team, and I know he’s going to do a great job at East Texas Baptist.”
Holden said in Clark, East Texas Baptist is getting a leader with solid character.
“He loves the game, and that’s one of the things,” Holden said. “When you get to the next level, it becomes a business, and if you don’t love the game, you don’t love to practice and you don’t love the weight room, it becomes tedious, and that’s something that they’re never going to have to worry about that with him.”
This past season, East Texas Baptist finished with a 7-3 overall mark, including a 3-3 record in the American Southwest Conference.
