CCHS Eagles roll past Ascension Episcopal

The Central Catholic Eagles continued their recent surge with a 73-49 victory against Ascension Episcopal at home Friday in District 7-1A action.
Central Catholic, who has won six straight, jumped on Ascension Episcopal early as it ran out to a 24-8 lead and took a 39-23 lead at halftime.
The Eagles extended their lead to 51-40 after three quarters.
Central Catholic had five players hit double figures and connected on seven three-pointers.
Samarick Paul led the Eagles with 17 points, while Nicholas Case had 15; Stefano Guarisco, 13; Tyler Hoffpauir, 12 and Garret LeBlanc, 10.
Central Catholic will look to extend its winning streak and gain an upper hand in the District 7-1A standings when it travels to face Lafayette Christian in district action today.
Both teams enter district play with 4-0 marks.
The game is a unique one because Central Catholic (10-7), which owns a multi-year district winning streak, will enter the game as an underdog as Lafayette Christian (16-3) is the second-ranked squad in the latest Louisiana High School Athletic Association unofficial power ranking, while Central Catholic is No. 14.
“It’s a good test for us early in district,” Central Catholic coach Ree Case said. “There’s still a lot of season to go. We’re looking forward to it.”
Case said Lafayette Christian has multiple scoring options so his team must be balanced like Friday night.
Today’s contest will begin around 7 p.m. after the girls’ game.
Catholic beats Patterson
in overtime
Catholic High of Baton Rouge used a big fourth quarter to crawl back into its ballgame with Patterson and then edged the Lumberjacks in overtime to claim a narrow 37-35 win.
While Patterson led 32-24 heading into the fourth quarter, Catholic High outscored it 11-3 in the final quarter to knot the game at 35 at the end of regulation.
In overtime, Catholic High outscored Patterson 2-0 for the victory.
Nehemiah Augustus led the Lumberjacks with 10 points, while Taylan Grogan and DJ Jones each had six and Dontrell Benjamin scored five.
Patterson (10-3) will return to action Friday when it begins District 9-3A action at Donalsonville in a 7 p.m. contest.
Kaplan overwhelms
Berwick
Kaplan outscored Berwick in every quarter in route to a 69-27 win in Berwick Friday in nondistrict play.
The Pirates led 18-10 after the first quarter and 32-15 at halftime.
The visitors extended their lead to 49-25 after three quarters.
Audwin Williams led Berwick with 12 points, while Tré Matthews had five; Tyvon Batiste, four; and Cody Roberie and Tim Shelby, three each.
Kaplan connected on six 3-pointers in the contest
Berwick (7-11) will begin District 9-3A play Tuesday when it travels to Franklin. Varsity will begin at 7:30 p.m.
