Central Catholic used a 10-run third inning to get itself back in its game with Patterson and scored six more in the fourth on its way to a run-rule victory in five innings Thursday at Nicholls State University’s Ray E. Didier Field.
In a game that matches siblings in Patterson coach Ryan Jensen and Central Catholic coach Tyler Jensen, Patterson had the upper hand early.
The Lumberjacks plated a run in the first on an error, in the second on Sirbatian Charles’ RBI single and three more in the third. Two of those third-inning runs came on Tyrik Singleton’s two-RBI double, while Singleton scored on Bryce Beauboeuf’s RBI single.
Central Catholic responded with 10 runs in the bottom of the third inning, sending 14 batters to the plate.
After back-to-back one-out singles by Patrick Barron and Samuel Guarisco to begin the inning, Patterson pitcher Jake Lagrange began to have problems on the mound as the Eagles scored its first four runs via two hit batsmen, a passed ball and a walk with the bases full.
After Lagrange was replaced by Joel Singleton, Sage Thibodaux flied out to shortstop before the Eagles got its first run-scoring hit of the inning, a two-run single by Barron.
A few batters later with the bases loaded, Courtney followed with a three-run double to left field for a 10-5 advantage.
Things didn’t get much better in the bottom of the fourth inning as Central Catholic continued to cash in on Patterson walks and hit batsmen to plate five of their six runs.
Patterson hit six Central Catholic batters and walked seven.
Patterson plated its final two runs in the top of the fifth on Charles’ two-run double, while the Eagles scored their final run in the bottom of the fifth on Samuel Guarisco’s double.
Courtney led Central Catholic with a 2-for-2 performance with a double, five RBIs and a run, while Patrick Barron was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs.
Other top contributors included Samuel Guarisco, 2-for-3, a double, two RBIs and three runs; Stefano Guarisco, 1-for-1, an RBI, a stolen base and two runs; Bryson Barbier, 1-for-3, an RBI and two runs; Nick Case, 1-for-3, a double and two runs; Matthew Barbier, two RBIs and three runs; and Charlie Barron, an RBI.
Charlie Barron earned the win for Central Catholic. In three innings, he surrendered five runs — one earned — on five hits with one walk.
In two innings of relief, Bryson Barbier surrendered two earned runs on four hits with a walk and fanned two.
Lagrange suffered the loss for Patterson. In 2.1 innings, he surrendered seven earned runs on four hits with five walks and fanned two.
Spencer Landry led Patterson with a 3-for-3 performance with an RBI and two runs, while Tyrik Singleton was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs. Other top contributors included Beauboeuf, 2-for-3, a double, an RBI and a run; and Charles, 1-for-2, a double, three RBIs and a run.
Patterson returned to action today when it hosted Franklin High in a doubleheader set to begin at 11 a.m.
The Lumberjacks will close out their regular season Monday when they host Morgan City on Fan Appreciation Night. Admission will be free.
Central Catholic will close out its regular season Monday at home when it faces Westgate in a 5:30 p.m. contest.
