E.D. White beats Berwick 48-0

Despite the lopsided final, Berwick head coach Craig Brodie said following his team’s 48-0 loss to E.D. White that his team did its best.
Brodie, noting the squad had injuries — including playing without its starting quarterback Bobby Boudreaux — said, “I’m proud of the way the kids competed. I thought we did as well as we could do. That’s all I can ask for them.”
Unfortunately for the Panthers, the competition proved to be too tough again as E.D. White scored on its first five possession of the first half and added two touchdowns late in the second half in Friday’s District 9-3A finale for both squads.
E.D. White coach Kyle Lasseigne noted that his squad put pressure on Berwick and threw the ball well when they did turn to their passing game.
“I was pretty confident that offensively we had some things on the perimeter, and we had to go execute that,” he said. “It was a total team effort.”
E.D. White needed just three plays to reach the end zone on their first possession, which was capped by Darius Charles’ 10-yard run with 10:39 remaining in the first half for a 7-0 E.D. White lead.
After stopping Berwick’s most successful drive of the first half at the E.D. White 49, the Cardinals scored their second touchdown, capping a five-play drive with a Conner Chiasson 6-yard run.
The Cardinals added three more first-half touchdowns — a 1-yard run by Dannon Steib at the 1:20 mark of the first quarter, a 14-yard pass from quarterback Benjamin Sposito to Thomas Legendre with 10:33 remaining in the second quarter and a 38-yard run by Jeremy Rounds with 8:02 remaining in the second quarter.
The second half was brisk as a running clock was used.
E.D. White added two more scores late in the fourth quarter, including a 40-yard interception return by Rounds that ended the game.
The touchdown followed another E.D. White score on a 3-yard run by Elliot Rodrigue shortly beforehand.
E.D. White rolled up 381 total yards, including 305 yards rushing. Conner Chiasson’s five carries for 80 yards and a touchdown led the squad, while Hayden Tortorich had three carries for 60 yards and Charles, four totes for 49 yards.
Bradley Hamilton and Josh Chiasson each caught a pass for 31 yards, while Legendre had a 10-yard touchdown catch.
Defensively, E.D. White held the Panthers to 108 yards of offense, including 98 rushing.
Drew Landry and Jeremy Boudreaux, who both played quarterback for the Panthers, led the Berwick rushing attack with 43 and 42 yards, respectively.
Audwin Williams had the Panthers’ lone pass reception for 10 yards.
E.D. White advanced to the postseason as the No. 11 seed in the Division 2 select bracket, which combines both 4A and 3A select schools. The squad will travel to face No. 6 seed Parkview Baptist Friday.
For the Panthers, Friday’s contest meant the end of the high school football careers for the squad’s seniors.
“When I came in, they were freshmen so we kind of grew up together here,” Brodie said. “They and the other two classes in front of them they’re helping to build this program. There’s a process we’re going through. It’s just going to take a little time. Every year we’ve made improvements in our record. When we get this thing going year-in and year-out, we can look back and thank these guys for the time … they put in under rough conditions, losing a lot of games by big scores. It’s all about just the character of the kids. To persevere and to keep working hard and never give up and come to practice every day and have a good attitude. That’s all I can ask anybody.”
Brodie said in the future, his coaching staff would have to be tougher if the squad wants to build upon its recent success.
“We’re going to have to ask for more and more commitment from them, and we need to challenge them a lot more if we’re going to learn how to compete better. It’s all part of the process.”
