Ellender tops MCHS Tigers

Ellender outscored Morgan City 45-25 in the second half to turn a halftime deficit into a 15-point win in a key District 7-4A contest Friday.
In a game featuring two teams vying along with Vandebilt Catholic to remain atop the district standings, Morgan City took a 12-8 lead after the first quarter and extended its advantage to 25-21 at the half.
However, Ellender exploded for a 23-10 scoring advantage in the third quarter for a 44-35 lead after three quarters.
In the fourth quarter, the Patriots outscored the Tigers 22-15.
Makye Richard was the lone Tiger in double figures with 11 points.
Other scorers for the Tigers included Abram Hartley and Jaylen Jones with nine points apiece; Tywuan Walker with eight; Brady Fryou, seven; and Marvin Young, Deondre Walker and Lloyd Singleton with two points apiece.
Morgan City slipped to 3-2 in District 7-4A with the loss, while Ellender improved to 5-1.
Morgan City (13-8) will return to action Tuesday when it travels to take on South Terrebonne. Junior varsity boys’ action will begin at 5 p.m., while the varsity boys’ contest will begin at approximately 7:30 p.m. following the girls’ varsity contest.
Patterson survives
Vandebilt Catholic
The Patterson Lumberjacks blew a 20-point lead against the Vandebilt Catholic Terriers but held on to survive for a 47-40 victory in nondistrict action at Patterson Friday.
Patterson, who led 16-0 after the first quarter, extended its lead to as much as 20-0 before Vandebilt Catholic’s Palmer Hill hit a 3-pointer at the 4:19 mark of the second quarter to break the scoring drought for the Terriers.
Patterson led 26-9 at the half.
However, in the third quarter, Vandebilt Catholic continued to chip away at its deficit as it outscored Patterson 12-4 and trailed 30-21 after three quarters.
In the fourth, the Terriers continued to catch up, eventually tying the game at 35 on a bucket and again at 37 on two free throws by Shane Thompson with 2:30 left.
However, Patterson’s Mykel Jones hit both free throws in a 1-and-1 situation with 2:28 remaining for a 39-37 lead and Patterson was able to hold off Vandebilt for the win.
Mykel Jones led Patterson with 16 points, while Daylon Charlot scored 10.
Other scorers for the Lumberjacks included Kenneth Washington, eight; DJ Jones, six; Taylan Grogan, three; and Jordan Butler and Malik Garrett, two points apiece.
Kane Degruise led Vandebilt Catholic with eight points.
Patterson will return to action Tuesday when it travels to face Donaldsonville. Junior varsity boys’ action is set for a 5 p.m. start while the varsity boys’ will follow the varsity girls’ contest at approximately 7:30 p.m.
Hanson upsets
Central Catholic
The Hanson Memorial Tigers upset the Central Catholic Eagles, 44-38, in District 7-1A action in Franklin Friday.
The big quarter for the Tigers came in the third period where they turned a 19-18 halftime lead into a 33-24 lead after three quarters.
Central Catholic outscored Hanson 14-11 in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough.
Hanson took an 8-6 lead after the first period, while Central Catholic outscored Hanson 12-11 in the second period.
Jalen Johnson and Samarick Paul both reached double figures for the Eagles as Johnson had 16 points and Paul, 12.
Other scorers for the Eagles included Stefano Guarisco, five points; Matt Vorenkamp, three points; and Charlie Solar and Blake Byrne, each a point.
Jacob Stewart led Hanson with 16 points.
The Eagles (11-11 overall, 7-2 in district) will return to action Tuesday when they host Ascension Episcopal in a District 7-1A contest set for a 6:30 p.m. start.
Berwick falls
in overtime
The Berwick Panthers fell to Franklin High 62-60 in overtime in Franklin Friday in District 9-3A action.
Kenan Jones and Tysin Meads both had double-doubles for the Panthers in the loss. Jones scored 27 points and had 12 rebounds along with two steals and one assist. Meads had 10 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block.
Other contributors for the Panthers included Donald Tillman, who had 12 points and seven assists, and Cody Roberie, who scored six points and also had two steals and two assists.
Berwick (10-12, 1-4) will return to action Tuesday when it hosts Christian Life in a nondistrict contest. The night will feature just a varsity contest set for a 6 p.m. start.
