Lady Tigers prepping for No. 2 Warren Easton

When the Morgan City Lady Tigers take the court Thursday night against No. 2 ranked Warren Easton, it will be a new experience for the entire team as no one on the current roster has participated in a high school postseason basketball game.
The Lady Tigers (14-9), the No. 31 seed, will be making the postseason after a four-year absence. Their last postseason appearance in 2009 ended in a 61-60 loss to Riverdale, also in the New Orleans area.
On Thursday, they will be facing an impressive Warren Easton squad who sports a 30-3 mark and until falling 52-50 to current 4A top seed Salmen on Feb. 8, had won 14 straight games. Warren Easton finished the season as the District 9-4A champions.
Morgan City coach Anthony Garrison said through talking with other coaches, he has gotten an idea of what his squad will face.
“Basically it comes down to executing, playing smart and just playing our offense, giving it our all,” he said.
Junior guard Casey Chenevert said it’s “an honor” for the squad to advance to the postseason.
“We’re young, but it’s an experience,” she said.
While she wouldn’t characterize it as exciting to play Warren Easton, she said the team would go out there and see what it could do and build from there.
That experience of making the playoffs, Garrison said, is huge for his young squad, both now and in the future.
“Words can’t explain how big that is for these girls,” he said.
Morgan City, who finished fourth in District 7-4A, has been led this season and in seasons past by Chenevert, a Class 4A All-State selection in 2013.
This year’s team also has gotten solid play in the post from freshman Laqwajhia Bourgeois, who has turned in several double-digit performances this year and has given Morgan City the option of having a presence inside.
“Laqwajhia’s been huge. … She’s very, very, very smart. She has a very high IQ as far as basketball for her. … The sky is the limit for her,” Garrison said.
