Lumberjacks will host Class 5A Brother Martin
Patterson and Brother Martin went toe-to-toe last season with the Class 5A Crusaders pulling out a close hard-fought win in New Orleans against Patterson.
This time, Brother Martin comes to Patterson for what should be another hotly-contested game.
The Crusaders upended host E.D. White 28-0 Friday during the Brothers of Sacred Heart Jamboree at John L. Guidry Field at Nicholls State University. Brother Martin is running an up-tempo passing attack but also has two capable running backs.
Quarterback Jake Broggi, a returning starter, has several talented targets this season. The veteran receiving corps had nearly 200 yards in Friday’s game. Broggi connected with four receivers, en route to the Crusaders’ first touchdown.
“They have three really good skilled guys on the outside,” first-year Patterson head coach Chad Blanchard said. “It should be a good matchup with our defensive backs.”
Junior Shay Ragas, an All-District 9-3A selection a year ago, will be at one cornerback spot for Patterson, while first-year starter, senior Devontre Richard, is the other. Junior D.J. Jones and sophomore Dillan Giandelone are both new at the safety positions.
Highly-regarded running back Jared West returns as Brother Martin’s top ground threat, but Bruce Jordan-Swilling, son of former New Orleans Saints standout Pat Swilling, has become a force as well.
West had 64 yards rushing and two scores Friday, while Jordan-Swilling accumulated 100 yards on his initial six carries. Among those were touchdown scampers of 10 and 30 yards.
“West (had) a strong season last year, and he picked up where he left off in the jamboree,” Blanchard said.
West is committed to Northern Colorado.
“As long as we tackle well and get off the field when we’re supposed to, we’ll be fine defensively,” Blanchard said. “We have to clean up the penalties from last week, because we can’t give them extra chances to score.”
Second-team All-State linebacker Nehemiah Augustus and John Davis both had big tackling games in Patterson’s 27-12 win against Morgan City Friday.
Brother Martin’s 4-2-5 defense was troublesome for E.D. White as defensive lineman Jacob Parker totaled two sacks and E.D. White’s first-team offense had two first downs.
E.D. White’s first team recorded just 40 total yards.
Offensively, Patterson features quarterback Sirbatian Charles and wide receivers Mykel Jones and Daylon Charlot.
Charles proved to be a dual threat, going 5-for-5 passing for 151 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for two scores. Standout receiver Mykel Jones was in mid-season form with two catches for 103 yards and two touchdowns, while the other star wide out, University of Alabama commit Daylon Charlot, had two catches for 48 yards.
“If we stick to our game plan, pick up first-downs and take our shots with our skill people, we will (be) OK,” Blanchard said.
Friday’s kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
