Lumberjills fall in overtime

When the Franklin Lady Hornets and the Patterson Lumberjills met the first two times this season — once in tournament play and earlier in District 9-3A — the games took overtime to decide the winner.
Tuesday’s finale was no different except this time, instead of the Lumberjills coming out like they did during the first two contests, Franklin took the overtime victory, 67-52.
While Franklin took a 19-7 lead after the first quarter, Patterson crawled its way back into the contest and trailed just 27-23 at the half.
From there, the game stayed close within the rest of regulation as Franklin led 36-35 after three quarters before Patterson outscored the visitors 15-14 in the final period to force overtime after both teams ended regulation tied at 50.
In the extra period, Franklin exploded with a 17-2 scoring run to take the win.
Nakia Brooks had nine points as well as a team-high 15 rebounds; Makayla Ruiz had 10 points and six rebounds; and Galen Grogan, seven points and six rebounds.
Other top contributors included Jamiri Brown and Jazmin Evans, eight points apiece; Jamila Tate, seven points; and Kemprielle Williams, three points and eight rebounds.
CCHS beats Vermilion Catholic
In a battle of top 4 teams in Class 1A in Abbeville, No. 1 seed Central Catholic rallied to top No. 4 seed Vermilion Catholic, 46-44.
Trailing 35-29 heading into the final quarter, the Lady Eagles outscored Vermilion Catholic 17-9 in the final period for the come-from-behind win.
The win was the Lady Eagles’ closest victory this season as they had breezed past competition for much of the season, winning by no less than 13 points, including a 53-35 victory against Vermilion Catholic in Morgan City on Jan. 10.
Earlier this season in Morgan City, the Lady Eagles defeated Vermilion Catholic 52-35.
Central Catholic had led 14-9 after the first period and 23-19 at halftime.
Randi Brown had 24 points, one block, two steals, and four rebounds.
Teammate Meo Knight had 15 points, eight rebounds, six blocks, five assists and one steal.
Other top contributors included Megan Landry, three points, three blocks, one steal, one assist and four rebounds, while Hallie Autin had four points and four rebounds.
The Lady Eagles had 10 blocks in the contest.
Central Catholic (21-2, 9-0) will return to action Friday when it hosts Hanson Memorial Friday at 6 p.m. With a win, the Lady Eagles can clinch at least a share of the District 7-1A title.
Berwick falls to E.D. White
The Berwick Lady Panthers fell 37-3 to E.D. White in District 9-3A action at home Tuesday.
The Lady Panthers scored their lone bucket in the fourth quarter on a McKenzie Baumgartner 3-pointer.
The Lady Panthers (2-20 overall, 0-6) will return to action Friday when they travel to face Franklin in a 6:30 p.m. contest.
