The Morgan City High School Tigers put together an impressive drive on its first offensive possession of the night for a touchdown Friday against Sophie B. Wright.
From there, though, the Tigers had to hold on for dear life and rely on their defense in what ended up a 6-0 victory.
Regardless of how they got there, Morgan City now is 2-0 for the first time since the 2012 season when the Tigers started the season 4-0 en route to a 4-5 season.
In Friday’s victory, Morgan City’s Malik Phillips returned the opening kickoff 15 yards to the Tigers’ 33.
From there, Morgan City moved the ball 67 yards in 12 plays, capped by Phillips’ 10-yard run. Miguel Perez’s extra point was wide right, but Morgan City led 6-0 with 5:13 remaining in the first quarter.
The drive also included runs by Scioneaux and Kedric Scott as Scioneaux broke a 19-yard run on the second play of the drive, while later on a fourth-down-and-five situation, Morgan City quarterback Abram Hartley connected with Scioneaux for an 8-yard completion and a first down at the Wright 28.
Scott, who carried the ball four times on the drive, converted a third-down-and-one situation from the Wright 19 for 6 yards to the Sophie Wright 13.
From there, the game turned into a series of stalled drives by both teams.
“It was real ugly,” Morgan City coach Scott Tregle said. “We didn’t only shoot our-selves in the foot on offense, we blew both of our feet off. Every time we have a chance to get a first down, we fumbled the snap or (the quarterback and running back ran) into each other.”
Tregle said the plays were ones the Tigers had been working on since the begin-ning of the season.
“I don’t know where their focus was, or what, but we got to clean that up because it’s going to come back to haunt us,” he said.
While Morgan City totaled just 180 yards of offense (131 rushing and 49 passing), its defense limited Sophie B. Wright to just 82 yards of offense (86 rushing and -4 passing).
“Our defense played lights out,” noting Wright scored 42 points last week.
Wright’s best threat to score in the first half came when they gained possession at the Morgan City 27.
From there, the squad moved the ball down to the Morgan City 4-yard line on the strength of runs of 12 and 11 yards by Brandon Williams for a first-and-goal at the Morgan City 3.
After a delay of game pen-alty backed Wright up to the Morgan City 8, the drive ended one play later when Kevin Johnson’s pass was picked off by Lloyd Singleton in the end zone and returned to the Morgan City 18.
From there, Morgan City put together its most impressive drive of the first half, moving from its 18- to its own 10-yard line after a 27-yard completion from Hartley to Singleton with 13 seconds left in the half.
Following a timeout, Hartley’s first-down pass to Makye Richard was complete but out of bounds, while Hartley’s second-down pass was incomplete. Richard couldn’t hold onto the third-down pass and Morgan City went to the half with a 6-0 lead.
Morgan City’s best drive of the second half came on its initial drive of the third quarter when Scott Comeaux returned a Sophie B. Wright punt to the Wright 21.
However, Kalen Hillen was dropped for a four-yard loss on first down. While the Tigers gained positive yard-age on the next three plays, Scott was a yard short on a fourth-and-three situation from the Sophie B. Wright 14.
Wright’s best drive of the second half was its final one of the night when the Warriors took over at the Morgan City 20 after Morgan City punter Singleton was dropped for a 13-yard loss after dropping the snap on a punting situation.
While Wright got as far as the Morgan City 9 after a pass interference penalty against Morgan City and a 1-yard run by Johnson, Wright was penalized on the next play. Johnson lost three yards on the following play.
Johnson’s third-down pass was incomplete and his fourth-down pass was batted down by Richard.
Scott and Scioneaux led Morgan City offensively. Scott rushed 18 times for 69 yards, while Scioneaux had eight carries for 44 yards and caught two passes for 22 yards.
Through the air, Hartley completed 3-of-10 passes for 49 yards.
Singleton had one reception for 27 yards for Morgan City, too.
The Tigers will return to action Friday when they take on North Central. North Central fell 38-6 to Centerville Friday.
