Morgan City's upset bid against Westgate falls short

Behind a huge fourth quarter, Westgate spoiled Morgan City High School’s upset bid in their boys’ basketball game at Morgan City Wednesday.
Ahead 38-36 after three quarters, Westgate, Class 4A’s fourth ranked team in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s latest power rankings, outscored Morgan City, ranked No. 29 in 4A, 19-8 in the final period for the victory.
Morgan City took leads of 12-11 after a period of play and 28-22 at halftime, before Westgate outscored it 16-8 in the third period for the lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Makye Richard led Morgan City with 15 points, while Deondre Grogan scored 11. Other Morgan City scorers included Tywaun Walker, seven; Jared Singleton and Morrquise Charles, four points each; Devonta Grogan, two; and Ke’Sean Francois, one
Tuesday, Morgan City fell to Ellender, 87-80, in District 7-4A action in Houma.
Morgan City connected on 10 three-pointers, including five in the first quarter and four in the third.
Walker and Richard led Morgan City with 16 points each, while Deondre Grogan scored 15 and Francois, 14. Other scorers included Singleton, nine; Taaj Daniels, four; and Kerwin Francois, Ronnell Williams and Charles, two points each.
Morgan City (11-8 overall, 1-2 in District 7-4A) will return to action Friday when it hosts South Terrebonne in league action. Varsity play is set to begin at approximately 7:15 p.m.
