Patterson pummels Berwick, 61-21

Offensively, I think we played really, really well, but defensively, I think we lost focus and gave up some big plays.
By CORWIN MURRAY

Patterson took one step closer to the District 9-3A championship with a 61-21 win against rival Berwick Friday at Geisler Stadium.
Patterson (6-3 overall, 3-0 in district) clinched at least a share of the district title with Friday’s win and can win the title outright this week with a win at winless Franklin.
Friday’s win also was Patterson’s sixth straight this season.
The Lumberjacks’ offense wasted little time lighting up the scoreboard. After standout running back Tristen Ausama ripped off a combined 34 yards on his first two carries, junior quarterback Sirbatian Charles hit Daylon Charlot for a 28-yard touchdown at the 9:07 mark of the first quarter.
Berwick fumbled and the ’Jacks followed the same script on the next possession with Charles hitting Nehemiah Augustus for a 5-yard score after two Ausama runs.
Patterson led 14-0 with 8:11 to play in the opening quarter.
Berwick (2-7, 1-2) turned the ball over yet again on the next possession. This time, Patterson defensive back Shay Ragas picked off a Jeremy Boudreaux pass to set up the ’Jacks at the Panthers’ 30-yard line.
“Again, we kill ourselves with turnovers,” Berwick head coach Craig Brodie said. “I thought we moved the ball well offensively, but we continue to shoot ourselves in the foot with the turnovers.”
Receiver Mykel Jones took a jet-sweep and darted 30-yards for another Patterson touchdown at the 6:20 mark of the first quarter. Jones carried twice for 60 yards and two touchdowns in the game.
Trailing 21-0, Berwick turned the ball over for the fourth time as standout running back Braden Billiot lost the handle and Augustus recovered for Patterson.
“It’s nearly impossible to win any game with so many turnovers, let alone a game against a team like Patterson,” Brodie said. “But I don’t think the kids ever gave up.”
Charles hooked up with Charlot again for 42 yards to set up a 4-yard scoring run by Ausama. Charles was 8-of-9 passing for 156 yards and three touchdowns, while Charlot had two catches for 70 yards and a touchdown.
Ausama carried nine times for 82 yards and two scores to lead Patterson.
John Davis carried four times for 57 yards and two touchdowns, while Charles carried four times for 48 yards.
“We knew we had to get a lot of guys to the ball on defense, but we just didn’t get it done,” Brodie said. “When they got into space, we couldn’t tackle them.”
Berwick got a big kickoff return from Billiot to take over at the Patterson 35-yard line in the first quarter. The Panthers mixed run and pass to set up a first-and-goal at the 9-yard line as time expired in the first period.
Berwick capped the drive with an 11-yard touchdown strike from Boudreaux to Audwin Williams and cut the Patterson lead to 28-6 with 11:01 remaining in the half.
Boudreaux was 7-of-18 passing for 54 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Williams had four catches for 28 yards and a touchdown.
Berwick surprised Patterson with an onside kick on the kickoff that Kenan Jones recovered. The Panthers’ momentum was short-lived, however, with Charlot intercepting a Boudreaux pass to give the ball back to Patterson.
“Offensively, I think we played really, really well, but defensively, I think we lost focus and gave up some big plays,” Patterson head coach Chad Blanchard said.
Patterson added another on score when Charles and Augustus hooked up again for a 15-yard touchdown at the 6:19 mark to extend the lead to 34-6.
Jones added his second 30-yard run for a score to push Patterson’s margin to 40-6 with 3:46 remaining in the half.
Berwick struck again with a 37-yard touchdown pass from Boudreaux to Jones on a fade pattern with 1:23 left in the half.
“They made some big plays,” Blanchard said. “They have some good talent over there, but overall, I’m pleased with our performance but there are always some little things you can clean up.”
Berwick missed a 37-yard field-goal attempt as the time ran out in the first-half, trailing 40-14.
Patterson added three more scores on runs in the second half. Ausama scored on a 6-yarder, while John Davis scored on a 15- and a 1-yarder.
Billiot scored on a 6-yard run with 1:45 left in the game for Berwick. The senior led the Panthers’ rushers with 24 carries for 82 yards and a touchdown.
Berwick closes the season on the road Friday at E.D. White.
